If someone had never seen any of the Star Wars films what order you recommend watching them in? As they were released or starting with episode one?

I have googled this but there is no clear consensus so I am turning to the wisdom of TWTD.

Cheers.

I'd always say release date order, it will be hard to go back in time somewhat from the early 2000s to 70s made movies and see them as follow ups

Thanks all. I have now watched the original trilogy. I feel like it's very difficult to judge these films when even the latest one is older than I am.

Verdict:

IV - ok
V - good
VI - very good

I know sometimes the first film can be very much setting the scene. Although it's a good film, the Fellowship of the Ring is a good example.

Random thoughts:

Darth Vader really grew on me. In the first scene or two he seemed too human for a high ranking member of the 'evil' empire. As it went on though and that inner conflict began to grow I thought it was great character development.

C-3PO reminded me of Lukewarm in Porridge

I was mildly disappointed Vader didn't use his lightsaber to kill the emperor.

The father reveal scene was a bit of an anticlimax. Obviously I knew what it was in advance. The tone of the delivery was a bit underwhelming.

I can see how these films contributed to some of the amazing tv/films we have seen since. Squid Game immediately comes to mind with the parallels of Darth Vader/Stormtroopers. Perhaps even Star Wars itself took some inspiration from the Lord of the Rings books.

I will go on to watch the rest of them although not in any rush. I'm pleased I took the time to watch the trilogy and enjoyed it overall but they won't be challenging my top films. Again though, it's not fair to expect them to.

Thanks again for all the replies, much appreciated.

If the trilogy is still fresh on your mind then I'd advise you to watch Rogue One right now. It's a stand alone story but an immediate prequel to episode iv.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over
