Just looking back at the 1991-1992 Football League Tables 12:40 - Oct 12 with 1763 viewsGeoffSentence

That being the last time we won a league, and also the last year of the old First Division before the Premier League took over.

My word how somet hings have changed, and some have stayed the same.

Sheffield Wednesday finished third in the First Division, something they must look back on now as a dream. Oldham and Wimbledon were still in it and Luton, Notts County and West Ham were relegated.

In the second division, whilst we were winning it, Cambridge managed a play off place, alongside Derby, Leicester and eventual winners Blackburn. Swindon, Grimsby and Oxford were still in it, whilst Plymouth were relegated, alongside Brighton and Port Vale. Newcastle narrowly avoided relegation.

In the third division Brentford won the title ahead of Brum, with Peterborough (naturally) winning the play-offs with Huddersfield, Stoke and Stockport missing out. WBA, Bournemouth, Fulham, Reading, Bolton, Hull, Wigan , Preston and Swansea all had to resign themselves to another year at that level. Of the four teams relegated that year, only Shrewsbury are still in the league, with Bury and Darlington suffering financial woes since, and Torquay being the other one.

Burnley won division four, with Cardiff finishing 9th but qualifying for Europe through the Welsh Cup. Nine of the teams involved in it that year are no longer in the football league, including Aldershot who were expelled after going bankrupt.

Not only did Aldershot fail but Maidstone failed to finish that season. Two long-established clubs disappearing just as the Premier League started probably also fits your theme!

There's a lot of clubs managed at least a season in the Premier League since then, our five seasons looked ok when relegated in 2002 but rather less so now.

Maidstone were long established but had actually only been a football league club for 3 years, I think Aldershot have been back in the league since then possibly as a newly formed club

Poll: Who do you blame for our failure to progress?

Yes, Aldershot reformed a new club almost immediately as Aldershot Town.

I think we have managed something like just 5 seasons in the top flight since 1985-6, it shows you how bad losing Robson really was, because we never really recovered. Nottingham Forest is the other example, as after Clough went they've only been back up a handful of times.

On the upside, look at Leicester's and Southampton's recent stints, look at Brighton, Westham and even Brentford. We absolutely can emulate those clubs now.

51 different teams have been in the Premier League, more than half the league.

After 11 games we were on 23 points. We then went on a dreadful run of 5 draws and 3 defeats. It took us until the 20th game to break the 28 point barrier.
