I would have thought it likely that there is a common source rather than a copy and paste. Anyway, I now know why Labour's economic policies are so close to the Tories...

My OP was mainly in jest, but I am not sure it is a good look for an author, and I imagine the fact that it is the FT that has picked this up will hurt. And it's interesting that the book wasn't subjected by the FT to the sort of plagiarism check that my daughter's university essays underwent on submission, which would presumably have picked up more. Maybe though Reeves was taking her cue from Melania Trump. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-us-2016-36832095 But I don't suppose the story will get any further than the inside sections of the broadsheets. It's a bit embarrassing isn't it. Charitably, I know I've dropped other people's stuff into drafts I've written before as placeholders for further specific research, which may be the case here and she's forgotten that it wasn't original work? But that's a weak excuse.

Perhaps, but I think I can make a point here that no one else has picked up and that is I think I now know why Labour's economic policies are so close to the Tories...

You don’t deliberately but lazily change a few words though. Pretty clear this was the approach all along. But very heartening to see such a commitment to recycling!

Maybe it's because they are called Basic Books, but it is odd that they didn't, as a safeguard, run plagiarism software that would have picked up unreferenced passages, although primary responsibility for referencing lies with the author. Having said that, Basic Books gave up publishing serious academic books in 1997, so maybe less stringent standards apply to the sort of stuff they now produce. [Post edited 26 Oct 2023 12:46]

...because the Tories get their economic policies from Wikipedia in the first place? I thought they got them from the Mr Men books until you pointed that out.

Providing that sufficient checks are carried out to make sure that those sitting the exams are the named students and not competent ringers brought in to sit the exams in their place.
