Alan Devonshire 00:06 - Dec 12 with 2295 viewsSharkey

According to this, just after he'd signed for Watford from West Ham, Alan Devonshire played for Town as a 'guest' in August 1990.

If so, I'm guessing it was a testimonial, but whose?

Follow-up question: who was the most recent Town player to have a testimonial?

I was there.

It was for Phil Parkes who had his testimonial for West Ham having just signed for us. I seem to recall Bobby Barnes guesting for us as a second half sub. Result was 1-1 I think.

Second part of your question is a tricky one. Simon Milton's is the last one I remember but did Naylor have one? There was a pre-season friendly v Rangers at home in the mid 2000's but don't remember if it was a testimonial.

So it was at Upton Park I take it? How many Town fans were there?

p.s. amazing you can remember the score.

Yep. It was at Upton Park. A Sunday afternoon from memory. I'd guess around 600-700 Town were there. We played them in the league not too long after that.

Edit. Also, Parkes played in goal for them first half, us in the 2nd.

Stockwell presumably had one after Milton?

Stockwell had his just before the 94-95 season v Porto. Milton's was around 1998 against West Ham.

Milton is 2 years older than Stockwell but crucially, Stockwell had been at the club as a youth player when SBR was at the club, whereas Milts was in his 20's when he signed from Bury.

Tommy Smith is probably the player who missed out, based on length of service.

It would have been cool if he could have put together a Tommy Smith XI of players called Tommy Smith from League and Non-League.

Announcer: "Aaaaand the Teams: for the Tommy Smith XI. 1 Tommy Smith 2 Tommy Smith 3 Tommy Smith..."

I remember the rain before Milton's. Was absolutely throwing it down just before kick off, think there was some doubt over whether it would even go ahead.

The Colchester keeper Tom Smith is having a torrid season. He's really the number 2, but has played quite a bit recently, and has averaged about four conceded every game. It feels like a first-class batsman who has been 'found out' by the bowlers on the circuit, - '"can't cope with the short ball aimed at the ribs" etc. In his case, it's inswinging corners into a ruck of players about a yard from the line. It brings home how important a good goalkeeping coach is.

On that subject, Gilmartin will get a warm welcome this evening at Vicarage Road; he hardly played for them, (he hardly played for anyone really), but was there a longish time, and was well known for his good humour and for his media skills, as he was often a 'pundit' on commentary. He's probably the ideal person for keeping Walton cheerful while he's 'out of favour'.

How long did it take to Hammer out that deal?

Reminds me of one of Milton Jones' best jokes:

War crimes investigators have uncovered a mass grave of thousands of snowmen.

Either that or it was just a field of carrots.
