Yesterday illustrated how much we are punching above our weight this season 09:04 - Dec 24 with 601 viewsDubtractor

When you look at the two teams, and the quality they had compared to us in all positions, it really highlighted how impressive it is that we are still 7 points above them.

There is a fair argument that we were a bit foolhardy in going there with our normal game, playing on the front foot with high fullbacks, but that's what has got us where we are so far. Lets be honest, yesterday aside, we have enjoyed playing that way all season and it has got us into a remarkable position.

In the cold light of day though, that Leeds team hade better players than us across the pitch, and yet over half a season we are better than them at picking up points.

If we can add another 3 or 4 players in January, all of which need to be real first team contenders, then I see no reason that we make a real push to hold on to that top 2 place.

You’re exactly right and this is what I needed to hear after watching the highlights. Hard to say which goal was worse. They were all bad in their own way but the 4th in particular stands out. Just the three half-hearted attempts at a challenge.

Oh well time to suck it up and move on to the next one. 7 points from next three games would be very very nice. And then the most important window in our history opens up, COYB

They've got bags of quality in that squad, especially in those attacking areas. Ampadu and Rondon are superb players as well. That's what spending big money gets you. Let's be honest, first half there actually wasn't all that much in the game but their quality enabled them two good breaks for the second and third goals that drew errors from Davis and the game is then 3-0 and dead and buried. Hladky had only made one save, from which they scored the rebound. I'm still pissed about the foul on Chaplin because I think the game goes differently if it's still 0-0 after 20 minutes, not saying we'd get a result but I don't think it ends up 4-0. That said, the set piece defending wasn't good enough and in those kinds of games you can't give away a lead from a corner like that. Same happened at West Brom and the games followed similar patterns, just Leeds were more clinical.

Despite yesterday, we've showed we're much closer - as a unit - to the sides at the top than we are to the fodder. Let's not forget we're a couple of games removed from going to Boro and Watford back to back and taking 6 points and you don't do that if you aren't a very good side. Yesterday was a bit of a perfect storm and made it look like there was a massive gulf between us and Leeds when the rest of the season suggests that isn't really the case. We need to remind ourselves what an excellent season we're having, get straight back on it and look to pick up at least 6 points from the three games over the next 8 days and then see if we can strengthen in January. Get a bit more quality in this squad, and especially players with the pace and athleticism we've seen in some of the parachute payments sides, and we'll be just fine.
