Ladapo leaving 09:18 - Jan 20 with 3540 viewsBuffaloBill

It's been apparent for months and months he wasn't going to cut it with a team up at the top of The Championship.

So why do we think we've done little about strengthening up front? Even had Scarlett recalled - little of this has been a shock.

Shame that we're entering a game top v 2nd with Jacko the only fit and recognised striker.

I apologise in advance if this sounds derogatory but people do need to keep pinching themselves on a daily basis. We are second in the table, this is 1 league game left in Jan ahead of the extended run in to May starting Feb. This period is about setting ourselves up for that, nothing is won in Jan, to be in this position is incredible itself.

We know the window gets busy in its final stages. To be sweating this stuff about not having strikers is not seeing the big picture. Have this conversation in 10 or so days time we we know how we really fared in the window.

I know people have short memories (me too) but some are not keeping up with the way things have happened to get us to here and or the financial realities of the champ.

We are competing for promotion 1-2 seasons sooner than expected. We have a squad which is still quite geared to L1. We have come from a place where commercial revenue was falling/stagnant but now it’s growing, this will help us absorb persistent losses at this level. In the normal plan, we would have expected to build revenue and an ability to fund higher cost acquisitions by selling high over the next 1-2 years then expecting to compete for promotion at that point. However we all know the picture has changed rapidly but we have a fan base still expecting us to compete for players that are out of the price range for now or still not trusting the judgement on players and timing of acquisition. We have to believe on face value where we are with F&S rules, we are led to believe we have limited headroom given losses in last 2 L1 seasons.

Let’s be real. We don’t all have to be in the detail to have a valued view but let’s at least trust the leadership, recruitment and coaching team to identify people at a price that will both take us forward and not jeopardise our financial future, at least until there is a reason to believe otherwise.

Not signing this or that player, or not being able to bring a player to the club in a timeframe specified by a fan is very little to do with the club, it is the rules governing spending and or the selling club’s prerogative to wait for the very best deal for them which is likely to be 5 to midnight on deadline day.

Now Ladapo and KJ.

I will take the decisions MA and KMcK are making on club sustainability and team preparation over the what fans expect at this moment of the window.

We did very early business in key positions. Very important positions when it comes to creating and scoring goals. Striker in this team has a very specialist way of playing the role, if not scoring then KJ is the master of pressing and is pretty relentless in this respect. If that’s good enough for now for KMcK that’s good enough for me sitting supporting the player and the club.

Drivel. End.

You're spot on that we need to wait before judging this window. And that it's been a dream season, one we had no right to expect, and we should be savouring it rather than attempting to pull it apart.

In defence of many, I believe it's possible to discuss automatic promotion, what we believe is required and even be downbeat about our promotion prospects, without overstepping into ingratitude for what the players and club have delivered since the takeover. It's a delicate line sometimes for sure, and it absolutely shouldn't be skirted in the stands or around the ground. They clearly deserve our full, unconditional support and anything else is self-sabotage.

I think we should also be mindful that transfer dealings rarely match up perfectly with the manager's 'requirements'. It isn't safe to assume that McKenna is satisfied or dissatisfied with the make-up of the squad presently. He's pragmatic and diplomatic, important traits, so I expect him to continue as best he can whether we hire brilliantly or badly over the next 10 days. That's very different to him having orchestrated the striker situation in the summer or Indeed now.

It’s not the only transfer cock ups under Gamechanger, starting 21/22 without a captain and having Morsy and Walton delayed into the season was a huge mistake, had they arrived earlier we’d have started a lot stronger then.

I agree, we’ve not done well with the striker situation this window and it was probably avoidable. The fact we’ve been left with just Jackson available to play a role that’s vital to this manager’s style is a huge cock up, and I feel this will be the difference between us and our rivals this time.

You do realise that the policy of signing whoever was available saw us mid-table in League 1. Waiting to get the right players in has got us to 2nd in the Championship (3rd right now). Why do you suggest we go back to signing someone quickly instead of waiting to get the right players in?

Honestly, was expecting a striker in today. Seems bizarre to let Ladapo out on loan without any replacements in the wings.

Hirst (injured), Scarlett (recalled), Ladapo (loaned), Yengi (sold):

On top of that can't recall Ahadme as he's also long-term injured.

The club should have pulled out all stops to sign 2 strikers ASAP even at the risk of breaching FFP. If we don't go up, we sell. We may not have such a good chance at automatic promotion again in the near future although I hope to be proven wrong. And players like Davis (our most saleable asset) may leave if we don't go up this season anyway.

I don't really like the way Ashton keeps on harping about "scouting all the time"; "looking to bring in x more", "rather buy than loan" etc. all of which have mostly proven to be nothing but hot air. At time he does talk c0ck. Just like in the summer after signing Hirst permanently, Slicker, Hutch and Taylor he mentioned at least 2-3 more signings with some at the advanced stage but who did we get in the end? A half fit Williams on loan and Tuanzebe who the jury is still out.

Fighting for automatics, or even playoffs in the Championship without a quality striker is a tall order when you see the firepower our rivals have. Soton have A Armstrong and Che Adams. Leeds have a lethal combination of Summerville, James and Piroe. Even the scum have Rowe and Sargent. Us? Jackson.
