I would be gutted. My favourite beer. Hope it doesn't go under.

Hmm..Adnams have been trapped in the tied house model & pubs in Britain have been in steady decline for umpteen years. Their main selling point has been the quality & variety of their ales & the young aren't that attracted to real ale. Selling ale to other pubs has become harder, partly for this reason & because the young are happy to drink "keg ales", which are also easier to keep. It made sense for Adnams to diversify their product range, but sadly I think they're on the slippery slope downwards & I reckon the company will be sold within the next year or so.

I don't feel they're trapped in the tied pub model, they really don't have enough pubs for them to be much of a burden on the debt sheet, frankly if they had they'd probably be better off as then they could sell the pubs to make money. Their tied tenant pubs they certainly get their moneys worth out of them, let's leave it at that.

And they've got plenty of pubs both independents and tied to other pubcos who sell their beer, which is why they're different to say Greene King. Ghost Ship is fairly ubiquitous across the nation, was talking to someone who went to Preston who said first pub they went in had Ghost Ship & Abbot Ale on tap.

Their issue is rapidly rising costs, and falling demand, i dont think people appreciate how much energy costs have risen alone for commercial business, saw a pub share their energy bill 2 years ago it was 5k, this last year it was 25k, where does the extra 20k come from ?

, and in brewing energy impacts everything including raw materials, shipping costs, brewing costs, distribution costs.

Then you have falling demand again anecdotally hearing in a pub at the weekend, some people were visiting for the first time since covid lockdowns. Most pubs locally in Suffolk at least are heading towards in excess of £5 a pint.

I don't think the age thing, young v old drinkers, is the factor either , craft beers make alot of noise, they barely factor in any assessment of volume sales of beer in the UK, and most craft brewers are chasing the same customers and not expanding now.

Would now be a risky time or savvy time to invest??

I've noticed today that one of their retail shops up here in Norwich is now opening at 11am rather than the 9am that they've always used to.

I worry how bad things might actually be if they're at the point at which saving two hours' staffing costs is an apparent difference-maker for them.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

The loss of Adnams would be a disaster for Suffolk. Remember Tolly being taken over and production moved away. Who wants Ghost Ship brewed and bottled in say Hartlepool? Rising costs a huge factor, could brewers ask for help from government? To protect brewing heritage, employment. Pubs are still recovering from the pandemic or trying to, as we have been buying cheaply from supermarkets and it's difficult for them to entice us back. £5+ pints mean pubs busy less frequently, Pubs have to try and become community hubs, some have taken in post office, farm type shop, etc. In recent Desert Island Beer thread Town fans favourite was Ghost Ship...let's hope it doesn't disappear.

No more Broadside at the Black Tiles Martlesham, at least, they've ceased trading as business and the pub is closed :(

Heres what they posted on Facebook

"It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing Black Tiles Pub Company Limited has ceased trading and that Black Tiles will be closed temporarily.
This hurts me to the core.
I know many of you would like to ask questions, unfortunately I will not be unable to answer you directly, I will state that Black Tiles never recovered from the eye watering loss of trade during the Covid pandemic lockdowns, the price rises of raw products and tripling energy costs compounded by the increased cost of living eventually made it an impossible feat to make ends meet.
I’m going to take this as an opportunity to thank everyone that passed through the doors; Thank you all, sincerely, I have been blessed by your kindness, charm, cheek, warmth and friendship; some of you have literally become family-you know who you are.
I have been associated with Black Tiles for nearly 25 years, some say ‘time flies when you’re having fun’, it did for me, I really did have a great time.
Farewell
Adrian & the Black Tiles team"

I don't know if they still do this, might have been whilst they built their Raydon distribution place, but ironically enough their beer did used to go for a long trip up north for bottling purposes.

But jokes aside yeah agreed it would be a disaster and yes they and CAMRA & SIBA &BBPA and lots of pub and breweries have been lobbying the government hard for help, and what do they do ? claim they cut beer duty.

They didn't cut beer duty at all, simply froze it for 8months, claiming they'd cut the cost of a pint, except rents go up by rpi wages up 10%. Heineken announced a 2% rise in costs to all its tenants.

The cost of the pint absolutely still went up, all duty freeze does is save the multinational brewers cash because they pay less duty, when they aren't diluting down their abv in beer as another duty wheeze.

I'm not expecting the next budget will do anything to help either, because politicians of all parties, don't really drink in pubs with other people anymore, so don't know or understand the issues the industry face, they drink in their taxpayer subsidised bars in the house of commons.

Independent Brewers are facing a real struggle to stay liquid (no pun intended).

In my part of the world some big names are facing going under or have been rescued, e.g. Black Sheep, North Brewing, Elland Brewery. All being hit hard by ridiculous energy costs and zero help from this government which would rather everyone supped mass produced toilet water at wetherspoons.
