19 councils to sell assets 06:13 - Mar 1 with 8623 views | gtsb1966 | to pay for services next year. Obviously this government don't care because they won't be in power next year but what have they done to this country. The next ten years are going to be a rough ride. I read only this week that Babergh is only 2 years from bankruptcy unless it makes drastic cuts. The roads are a disgrace now, imagine what they'll be like in a few years time. Forget the electric car, you'll need a horse and cart. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-68439624

East Coast Council owned some property in Norwich rather bizarrely When the Tories were last in charge of Ipswich Borough Council, they borrowed money from Iceland which obviously went fairly badly

19 councils to sell assets on 20:02 - Mar 3 by Ryorry | I’d have upped that if not for your last para. Council tax does *not* favour “asset rich” pensioners who own their own homes but have diddly squat by way of actual income - quite the opposite, it’s iniquitous and unjust. True. Council tax is bad at all levels, costs a lot to collect and really should be removed. The problem with all and any example is that there are always exceptions. Why should the young couple across the road from me who are forced to rent (due to the bonkers housing market) pay a social care levy when a pension sits on a huge amount of cash locked into an asset? Why should a pensioner who has saved all their life to own a house in retirement be punished for prudent decision making? Why do we tax earned income but not wealth, so Sunak's tax rate is lower than many nurses? We blunder on with structures of government and taxation and nobody brave enough to grasp the nettle because it is unpopular, and politicians are more concerned with winning the next election than making the changes the country needs.
