I’ve decided that I’d quite like to try and publish/push some poems/short writings I have written over the last year or so. The trouble is, I have no knowledge or connections on how to do this/what to submit to.
As some of you may know I have always played music/sung in a band, but this is a very different area/field.
Does anyone have any tips? I’m considering self-publishing too, although am quite nervous about that.
Alternatively, if anyone is in that field and wants to take a chance, I’m happy to send some over. Some lyrics I’ve written are on this site: https://marcnewby.bandcamp.com/album/trialling
Thanks TWTD x

Have you been to local poetry open mic nights or poetry slams? That would give you contacts who will have an understanding as to the state of the market, and possibly who to approach. If you go down well then you may be able to build up a following of potential purchasers.
I am not a real part of it, but have put on a few poetry events in a venue I used to run, and think the poetry scene is generally moving away from publishing and more to performance poetry, both live and beyond that to videos on Vimeo, YouTube and TikTok etc.
Here's one of my favourites:

Keno's acquaintance is always worth a listen, saw him last month and apparently he always performs this one. Very emotional to hear it live:
You can make contacts going to events like this, you can also ask at your local library for the local little poetry mags that accept submissions and every so often you might get one accepted it's a bit like the rites of passage for stand up comedians and likewise can be a hard road even for the good ones.
I have seen a few good self published works and quite a few bad ones. Needs extreme self discipline and almost extreme wariness of the enterprises that will take you for quite a few quid and get you not much exposure.
There once was a writer called Swails Who liked to write verse and tall tales. Desperate to print He asked for some hints. So the forum blew wind in his sails.
You need to get an agent if such things exist in the poetic world. Even with a book deal publishers seem to be worse than useless, expecting authors to do all the promotion and selling off their own bat
