My view is that that is not actually true, and I say this as someone who has campaigned for a political party. If he thought it was in with a chance, he could choose not to appear at hustings, not put out leaflets, not do door door to door knocking or not do Facebook ads (which with his money he could afford). In other words, he could run a lacklustre campaign in order to ensure he didn't get elected and so win his bet. Of course, he may have not done that, but it's a bit like the legal maxim justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done. In this sense, a bet to win would not have been open to such accusations. [Post edited 25 Jun 2024 19:56]
