According to a German friend of mine living in England, its the Alton tower's for p!ss heads. And your better off going to small or large town versions..
You must be sat down to get served, there are one or two tents where there's kind of standing bar, but predominantly it's sit down at one of the benches to get beer
Consequently lots of areas inside the tents,.especially the really popular tents get booked, in the evening more than the daytime, booking might seem costly, but it does actually cost in all things considered as you get food too and it's just more relaxed
Inside the tents is the best atmosphere, there is unreserved seating outside at some tents, which is still great, but inside is better and I don't think the outside is always wholly covered so weather can be an issue. Your still free to wander in to any tent to look around but you won't get served unless you've a seat.
The beer is really strong in comparison to UK beer, pace yourself, which is easier said then done. I've always felt Paulaner was the best beer, but tbh after a few they all taste pretty much the same.
A stein, 1l, will cost between 13 and 15 Euros. You must then add a minimum 10% tip, else the beer server will ignore you when you want a refill.
I haven't been since cardless transactions took off,so I don't know if they've adopted it, possibly not because I think it would get abused too easily, there were cash machines on site by the entrance though it always unhelpfully gave you 100 euro notes, instead of 5 20 euros if you asked for 100 euros.
They also do food, so you dont have to go elsewhere on site and there are plenty of options but it's like there's a tent where they just do chicken, a tent where they just do fish, a tent where they just do pork. There are smaller tents that offer more variety but the big ones its like you want half a chicken or dont you, the vegan offer is probably potato salad. So pick a tent where you are happy to eat the food on offer.
Currywurst always looks better than it tastes.
Don't try the schnapps
If there's a group of you pick a location where if you get separated, and you will trust me, you meet up again at a specific time. The Bavaria statue is a good spot.
I've never done the funfair, and you can spend alot of money on various souvenirs, there are sellers who wander round the tents, they're not persistent, but you inevitably cave in and buy stuff from them you really don't need.
Afternoon music is usually oompah bands, in the evening it turns into covers rock band that gets everyone singing along badly, Hey Jude is a popular song choice you can of course sing your own lyrics :)

Yeah I'm not surprised it's still cash, because it's manic there, but that becomes the point, make sure you have cash, as I said there are some cash machines on site, but you might want to plan ahead first.
And the Op never specified a group size and even if there were only 8 or maybe just 6 of you I'd still pay for a 10 group table because it's actually then simpler to deal with.
The point is you must be sat at a table to be served, lots of tables get booked out, so you wont rock up at 8pm and find any tent with space for you unless you are really lucky.
I know it will sound sterotypical of Germany, but if you are wearing anything but Lederhosen you WILL be in a minority. Not that it will affect your experience of course, but when we went we found it odd being in a minority being in normal clothes!. I've been to various parts of Germany and I've found the Bavarians to be the friendliest, and are quite happy to have a chat with tourists, especially once the beers get flowing! You'll have a great time.
Seriously, the Munich lads and lasses will ALL be in their finest Bavarian outfits, and they look damn good! Unless you're going with some German friends who can sort you out some nice authentic Lederhosen (which are a lot more expensive than you think!) don't wear cheap costume ones as you will offend them as they are very proud of their outfits!
Went last year on a trip back to Europe. Was a genuine once in a lifetime experience and would recommend to anyone. Yes it’s busy, a bit trashy and touristy, but everyone was just having the time of their lives. Absolutely loved it,
Only caveat to that is that we were there from 1pm-7pm because we had our 14 year old daughter with us. It was clearly getting busier as we were leaving and there were more and more people passed out or close to passing out after 5pm.
Would have loved to have gone when I was a bit younger, but would be in a top five experience in my life. Worth spending time in Bavaria. We were in Munich and then Garmisch for a few day afterwards. A genuinely lovely part of the world, friendly people, good food and good beer.

I did the afternoon sesh circa 15 years ago and was surprised when leaving the massive tent to see heaps of bodies strewn all over the place. It really was a massive p*ss up but despite everyone being hammered I didn’t detect even a hint of aggression:it was so well natured. I’m ashamed to admit that I drooled over the serving girls and clearly wasn’t the forward looking, progressive, metrosexual that I liked to think I was.
