Emily Thornberry 09:11 - Jul 6 with 5265 viewsDJR

It hasn't got much coverage but Emily Thornberry (as Shadow Attorney General) appears to be the only shadow cabinet member not to be appointed to her post.

She's probably too much of a maverick for her own good, but it looks like this may have sealed her fate.

For my own part, it seems to me to be evidence of a sort of control-freakery which is rather distasteful, and not good for a healthily functioning goverment.

she is an accident waiting to happen (and that's without mentioning that she was one of the 38 idiots who nominated corbyn as leader).

Many of those who nominated Corbyn did so do that the left had a candidate they could vote for. He was never supposed to win.

I didn't pay full attention to the campaign but recall her being quite sloppy across the detail, or at least being called out by certain media as such. Personally, in media performances over the years I've found her to be quite prone to off-the-cuff, throwaway remarks when ruffled, so it isn't a shock to me that Keir's seen reasons to change. I thought she often lacked discipline in her own arguments, which delivered more entertainment value for me but rarely screamed professionalism.

*Shouldn't judge based on a smattering of TV and radio appearances so apologies to Thornberry for the above view.

The role of Attorney General and Solicitor General are not a political ones in the same way as other ministerial posts, and they are known as the Law Officers. They are meant to be neither seen nor heard, so there would be no reason for Thornberry to appear in the media justifying government policy which would call into question the independence of her role.

This from Wikipedia illustrates the point.

"Tt is considered preferable to exclude attorneys general from cabinet meetings so as to draw a distinct line between them and the political decisions on which they are giving legal advice."

Suella Braverman is the exception which proves the rule.

Comes across awful in panel discussions - lies, shakes her head, frowns, interupts, just generally dislikeable.

Alarm bells should have been ringing when he proved to be less popular than the May-bot.

If they’d binned him off after that disaster, we might have had 5 years less of Tory destruction.

Is it unfair to think Hermer may be better qualified? I've just googled the responsibilities and am surprised convention is to appoint MPs to this role, rather than a selection of our more senior/distinguished legal professionals.

It appears Labour adopted the same approach during the Blair and Brown years.

In principle what you say is correct, but I am not sure any government would want a truly independent Attorney General.

As it is, Hermer is apparently a friend of Starmer and has offered tours of the Royal Courts of Justice to Camden Labour Party members. He also donated £5,000 to Starmer's leadership campaign, and will be appointed as a Labour member of the Lords.

This appointment does though have parallels with the appointment by Blair of Derry Irvine as Lord Chancellor and Peter Goldsmith as Attorney General.

I am not sure how a different leader would have made any difference to what subsequently happened, unless they had accepted Theresa May's softer deal (or later free vote concessions).

For my own part, I thought it was a strategic mistake (as well as undemocratic) for the Labour Party to seek to obstruct Brexit but I am not sure Corbyn was the driving force for that.

As it it, we have ended up with the hardest Brexit possible, and with Starmer saying just the other day that he doesn't envisage the UK rejoining the Customs Union or the Single Market in his lifetime.
