Starmer had a good taste in music 10:30 - Jul 6 with 3414 viewsgtsb1966

At Leeds, he was influenced by the indie music of the 1980s, from The Smiths and The Wedding Present to Orange Juice and Aztec Camera.

Let's hope Leeds own Gang of Four were an influence.

As an aside, in my first couple of weeks at Leeds, Dire Streets and the Police played Leeds Poly. I didn't go to see them because they were unknown but within a few months they had made it big, including in the States.

I was going to post similar. At the time they just registered for me as another decent band played on Peel shows. Since realized what a top group they are / were. Still touring I believe, would love to see them.

They're a bit like McBusted.

Woodhouse, Leeds? They really are a great bunch of human beings, I used to hunt sab with them when they brought out the Pictures of Starving Children album.

A properly dynamic and politically involved community that. I spent heaps of time in those squats and we even set up a vegetable wholesale price outlet in one of the basements. I also remember fun trips to the city centre to disrupt NF paper sellers. With Junior being up there now I have had a chance to revisit and several look like they are still empty now. The Meanwood trail and urban farm are still a real treat.

I lived in Delph Lane from 1979 to 1981 and must admit any such community passed me by.

But then again I studied law, and perhaps I was just a bit too conformist.

As it is, I was back in the area last week and it was great to take a trip down memory lane.

This was pretty much a collection of squats on Hartley Avenue and the Burchetts in the mid to late 80's. A brief window of positivity.
