Hank and his band are playing at Global Rythm tomorrow...Christchurch Park

3.30 on Peppery Stage

Hank is one of my favourite musicians....songs of misery but with a cheerful backbeat so you can dance and cry at the same time

Poor ol' boy has been very unwell, literally climbing off his bed in ICU to perform for the good people of Ipswich

Sadly, the day will come when Hank no longer is amongst us, so I suggest catch him while he is still here

I remember him saying back in the 1980s that when he decided on a career in country music, he came up with the first name Hank and put a pin on a map which settled on Wangford in Suffolk.

This from a 2012 EADT article tells a slightly different story.

"Like a lot of people in the 70s he moved out of the city and settled in the country; Suffolk in Hank’s case where he played a lot of country music.

After his ex married his mate he found himself sat in the now non-existant White Lion in Wangford feeling really sorry himself.

“I was having a pint, almost crying in my beer, forgetting I was a lot to do with the fact she left. I suddenly thought Hank Wangford, what a great name for the guy who feels sorry for himself when he’s got actually no right.

“I played my first gig as Hank at Bungay May Horse Fair. For a couple of years I played all over Suffolk and Norfolk in a lot of the country and western clubs which were deadly for us.

I read a slightly different version in Vol 2 of his wonderful autobiog "Hank Wangford, The Middle Years" *

He was living very near to Wangford at the time and had already considered the name. However, Wangford village bakery had just closed down and various assets were being sold off....including the bread delivery van which was beautifully signwritten "Wangford Bakeries"

Hank needed some transport for his band, purchased said van and in an inspired moment amended the signwriting by adding "The Hank" , crossing out "keries" and adding "nd"......and Hank Wangford was born..... a quintessential loser in Love and Life. The rest is history...

* In the intro to Vol 2 Hank confesses that he was a little uncertain how to set about writing his autobiog.

He decided to write it in 3 volumes, starting in the middle and working towards the edges

We are still waiting for volumes 1 and 3.....

Sa him live, many, many years ago. There's an excellent live album, sadly unavailable on CD or streaming platforms.

He's actually Sam Hutt, and a gynaecologist.
