But those are an annoyance rather than a threat to anyone's well being. I understand the algorithm will just amplify whatever you have engaged with, even if you did so critically. So if you respond to Tommy Robinson to tell him he's a bellend, you might still end up seeing more of his content. I follow a variety of content on there, left wing and right wing accounts and everything in between. From the likes of Owen Jones and Ash Sarkar to the Jordan Petersons and Douglas Murrays. I don't see one side being promoted over any other and I don't get the rush to silence opposing voices. I do think 'old Twitter' was too quick to ban or restrict accounts, and it led to 'report-wars' with opposing sides working to shut the other up en-masse. This is not the way. And when I see politicians and governments saying they want to regulate or restrict online platforms, I get very very wary. They shouldn't have that power. |
I tell you what is a threat to people's well-being. Social media sites spewing out blatant lies purely to undermine social cohesion. And then an owner of one of those sites casually dismissing any responsibility by stating the UK is on the brink of civil war anyway. [Post edited 5 Sep 2024 23:15]

And this is the point. Yet many want to ignore this as it is part of their daily ritual. So it is to be overlooked. excused or down voted when brought up. [Post edited 5 Sep 2024 23:22]

I genuinely don't know as I haven't used the platform in over 10 years. |
“Does that work for the majority though”. Unfortunately I’m not in a position to conduct a wide scale survey., but by definition, the 2k accounts I follow are ‘good’ ones; and many of them are large (10k-500k followers) accounts. One of the reasons I stay on there is to push back/counter the idiots so that it *doesn’t* become an echo chamber of/for them. There’s no doubt the platform’s got worse under EM, many old buddies have got fed up & left, my tweets get fewer views than they used to, but I can be stubborn & determined not to let the eejits win! Plus I don’t think musk will necessarily last much longer as it’s owner. As an aside, only one person’s mentioned fb on this thread - a far worse, more insidious platform esp for harvesting your personal info, imho. | |
