Letty are you about?? 13:33 - Oct 18 with 1448 viewsKeno

I'm watching a Netflix programme by Graham Hancock on ancient civilisations and just wondered where he ranks on the Francis Pryor scale?

If Francis Pryor is a full 10 on the Francis scale Hancock may be the only 11.

Actually a few months ago some friends/colleagues were trying to get me to go on I think it was a podcast with Graham Hancock. I believe they thought it would be very funny..

Yer, that's him. All kinds of pseudo archaeological and historical fantasy/ half truths, sold as historical fact is sort of his signature.

There are a couple of people I'm friends with on facebook, who tend to share conspiracy type stuff, who are very excited about this new series.

I watched half an episode of the first series, as on paper it seemed like my bag, but it was so very obviously being ultra selective with what it was choosing to accept that it screamed as being suspect. That and the fact that every other sentence seemed to be sneering at 'conventional' archaeology.

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

I also have a couple of friends who are mad for the whole early secret civilisation thing. The thing is the 3 of us have been mates since we were kids, but I think they believe I'm hiding the secret from um. Luckily it's very good natured and quite amusing. They will watch some made up YouTube vudeo about giant footsteps or something and then expect me to explain it. I should film it some time.

There is something intriguing enough about alternative early Histories and many archaeologists/historians really haven't helped to dispel them by regularly claiming historical theory as fact. You only have to watch for example a documentary on say Stonehenge on the BBC and you will have one of their regular 'archaeological experts' tell you stuff that they know is just an idea or theory as if it's an historical fact.

I think I also watched about the same amount of the most recent Hancock one as yerself, if its the one that's been around for about the last 6 months or more?
Was just to awful to continue with. Actually, to be honest I was giving out to the TV and criticising it so badly that my partner couldn't take anymore and she turned it off.

People like Hancock really irritate me too. They are just grifters, being deliberately dis-honest, peddling half-baked lies as "theories/facts"to non-scientific minded/trained people.

I'll stick with Youtubers like Stefan Milo and Anton Petrov, presenting evidence and discussion topics in a non sensationalist but still interesting manner for laymen like me.

As a matter of interest, do you follow any youtubers channels within your community?

The thing is there's a lot more money in sensational pseudo history/archaeology then there is in the real thing. People generally don't wanna read dry excavation reports and sensational theories though deliberately dishonest sell more books or get more viewers.

I don't really follow anyone but I may take a look at the couple you've mentioned over the weekend.

In my profession I'm quite well known for being willing to deal with pseudo/ alternative archaeological types . Most don't want the hassle but I find it all quite amusing and makes a change from working with developers etc.
So I often have other archaeologists contact me an trying to pass on cliants/queries from alternative archaeology.
There just so random, ranging from people calling themselves Merlin to a man called Bitcoin King who was trying to pay me a lot of bitcoin to excavate a hill in Ireland that he believed reoresented the eye of a large Salmon/pike landscape sculpture that could only be seen from the air like the Nazca lines
