Just got my bill - and it seems like you get charged the roaming charges even if you don't actually use yer phone? A number of days I had my phone on and seem to have got charged despite making no calls/texts or using any data. I was connected to the local network, with my mobile data off.
Is that how it is or should I be complaining? |  |

Yeah just connecting to the network will incur a charge. Depending on who your provider is, you can usually buy a roaming bolt-on (or sometimes its included in your deal free). If i go far, far (eg farther than EU), I just buy a pre-paid SIM when I get to the country and use that. |  |

That seems a bit excessive, but it'll probably depend on your provider's precise policy.
I'm with O2 and when I went to Türkiye in 2022 I turned off mobile data, but kept my cellular connection on. There were no charges for the days on which I just did this, but I paid a £6 roaming fee for each day that I turned data on.
Similarly, when I went this time, I bought a local eSim and set it as my default/only data sim for the duration of the time out there, except for about five seconds after landing, keeping my O2 sim active for calls/SMS. I got charged £6 for the few seconds I spent connected to data on day 1, but no other charges otherwise. |  |
