Depressing stuff Gormie. Just really sad how many places and people around the world are being screwed over by despots. Still, at least Assad was given the boot, so eventually things can change (not that the future for Syria is in any way certain - probably more optimistic than for Palestine though).
I caught part of a programme called Festive Classics on Radio 4 this morning, which featured some Hanukkah songs.
Surprisingly, it featured one by Woody Guthrie (who was not Jewish) who had written some Hanukkah songs, as well as some other Jewish-themed songs.
It turns out his second wife was Jewish, and the four children she had with him (including Arlo Guthrie) were thus Jewish.
They would share songs and Woody would study Jewish texts and history. In the late 1940s, Guthrie wrote a handful of Hanukah-related songs, some for the local Jewish community and some for his children.
