Airfix. 04:44 - Dec 27 with 2804 views | Benters | Morning all I hope you all had a healthy happy Christmas. Two of my presents this year have been a couple of starter kits from Airfix, both in 1/72 scale. One was a Spitfire and the other a Sherman Firefly tank. As soon as I saw the boxes I was opening them up looking at the pieces, wonderful memories of being a child again. Lovely stuff.

Airfix. on 16:34 - Dec 27 by mellowblue | When I was about 10, I opened a Christmas present and it was the Airfix model of the Bismarck. I got all the bits out to weigh up the challenge, admired the shape of the hull pieces. Then I had to go to church. Later whenI returned I went to my bedroom and the hull pieces were missing. They never did turn up. One of life's little mysteries. Never did complete it. Should have sent off for replacement parts. |
That’s a shame. I had a Bismarck too but with all the bits. Never bothered painting it but did weight the bottom with plasticine so it floated - not very well. The Scharnhorst model wasn’t bad but in truth aeroplanes were my thing. Filled my Bismarck with fireworks and set fire to it sailing on the local pond. Didn’t really work - most of it just melted, most of the powder from the fire works got damp, and a blackened mess was left of the bits that didn’t sink. The ducks weren’t impressed and neither were we breathing in melting plastic fumes. Blowing up or just setting fire to Airfix aircraft was a little more successful. [Post edited 27 Dec 2024 17:49]

I remember getting in trouble for crashing all my finished aifix aircraft into our coal fire which left a sticky mess all over the coal grate as it all did not all burn away. And of course when it cooled it all hardened.

For some reason I thought it would be a good idea to shoot a lot of my models with an air gun. All that work then do that to them 😩

I made the one on fire in background - an Fw200C Condor. I think it was a Revell kit. https://plastmodel.com/7689-revell-04678-focke-wulf-fw-200-c-4-condor-bomber-172 Nice looking aeroplane and a pain in the rear end to the convoys early in the war. A converted airliner (Adolf had one for personal use), it was a bit fragile for military maritime operations. A heavy landing would break its back. The Germans have actually restored one in Berlin. Wish I’d done the Sunderland!
