There are a couple of things that bother me. 08:24 - Jan 17 with 968 viewsCheltenham_Blue

Firstly, the high press continues to be our Achilles heel. We really struggle against sides with a high, quick press. Brighton pinned us over and over, it was a Brighton press that lead to Davis putting it out for a Brighton throw that lead directly to a Brighton goal.

Hopefully Godfrey’s experience will help us there, but we need more players in with a quicker speed of thought when being pressed.

Second. Did we ‘bring the noise’ last night, we seemed all over the place, and for the first time in a long time not acting as one, multiple times different songs were going off in different parts of the ground, sometimes one won through, but at other times it all fizzled out. To hear Brighton fans singing that ‘football in a library’ song killed me.

I think a large part of that came from the 15 minutes of near total control by Brighton though, we keep giving teams long periods of possession that we don’t seem to be able to break out of, in those periods we continually fail to win our 2nd balls and turnover possession far too easily, the one thing that seems to help us grow into games is when we do have spells of possession. I just wonder if at times, particularly at the start of games we need to be a little more possession based, simple balls, be patient, come backwards if we need to, until the confidence builds that we can retain the ball against whoever we are playing.

I actually thought Brighton had a high press first half but Hurzeler tweaked it at half time and Brighton deliberately sat back more. Their aim being to keep us in the middle passing it around and try and hit us on the counter.

This.

We actually coped ok with the high press, albeit it wasn't always pretty, but when brighton sat off and allowed us a bit of space, they then looked more dangerous when they won the ball back.

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

Problem with the press is that playing out is mostly the only way we are going to get out at all. Mostly our players are physically less big and powerful than our opponents so the longer balls almost invariably come straight back.

Good summary Cheltenham Blue.

On the songs front the library chant was particularly embarrassing as it was true.
Understood the Bristol Rovers flat atmosphere but last night just never got going in a possible win match.
