I am disappointed that Hirst and Delap haven’t been tried up front together in a 3-4-1-2 formation with either Broadhead, Sammie, or Taylor behind them in the No 10 role. In games where we have little possession it may help to solidify the midfield and lessen the need for a manic charge (i.e. quick transition) when we have the ball. In the 3 behind the central striker system, both Clarke and Hutchinson tend to give the ball away hurriedly, and I fear Philogene will be the same type of player.
Sir Bobby used Mariner and Brazil to pull the centre halves wide, thus allowing the great John Wark or Eric Gates more space to run from deep. Both Delap and Hirst would be great in this type of partnership as they can create goals out of nothing, can rough up defenders, and can work the lines or close together. In the current system Delap generally doesn’t have close enough support when holding up the ball. Kieran’s current system will work well when Hutchinson, Clarke, and Philogene have more experience and we are mid table. However, we are in a relegation fight and two highly skilled battering rams are needed…

We need more people in midfield - if we go 2 up front we would get dominated by most prem teams.

City overran us in midfield and I think it was another reminder on how we need a midfielder who can bring the ball through midfield and get us up the pitch.

Try a 5-3-2 with wing backs.

So we spent all the money on Hutchinson, Jaden & Clarke, to play a system with no wingers?

Of the brief cameo we got from Jaden yesterday, he did at least look after the ball better than both Clarke and Hutch, hopefully that's a positive

Half joking or not, 4 4 2 would be nailed on death for us. Modern football is all about exploiting that space and creating overloads in the final third and without a 3 player configuration in the middle you have to rely on someone having 'jesus powers' to create an overload.
