Trying to convert forward players positions!

Hutchinson - £22 million - without a shadow of a doubt, plays his best games and is most valuable to us on the right, something he has repeatedly proven since he has been at the club, but McK now insists on playing him through the middle, this is the most frustrating thing for me, bar none.

J Clarke - £15 million+ - hugely successful Champ season, but now being asked to play a different role and it doesn’t suit him, he can’t do it.

Phil G - £22 million - played virtually all his games on the right (edit - inaccurate, just played a lot there this and last season) so naturally, first start, we stick him on the left, he looked totally lost today, unsurprisingly.

If there’s any criticism I have of the man, it’s this, well, this and signing Ben Johnson, who never fails to show that he is incapable of playing at this level, an absolutely horrible signing he has proved to be, at least we didn’t pay a fee for him.

not that he can't be questioned but this is unfair.

Hutchinson is the best 10 available for selection, which is the only thing that really matters. FWIW I'm not sure I agree he's better on the right either, but he's blown hot and cold in either position this season.

J Clarke I agree is a weird signing - has never made sense to me.

Philogene is listed as a (right footed) left winger. He played primarily on the right for Villa, but his most successful spell at Hull was on the left (appearing there 22 times vs 11 right side, according to transfermkt).

One frustrating thing I’ve found this season is how terrible we seem to be at throw ins.

It makes me chuckle everytime we get one as we nearly always lose possession from them.

Remember that Super Kieran Mckenna knows exactly what we need. Or so some say.

I think Hutch/Delap have suffered due to being overused, which led to the Hutch groin issue, which I also think we forced him back too early from and is why he isn’t at the top of his game, looks to be playing within himself a bit. I do think though, he is a far better player on the right, that’s my view, looks more natural.

Phil G, what little I saw of him from clips before he joined, seemed to have done most of his good work on the right side of the pitch and I assumed that’s where we would play him, given our well documented issues there, seems bonkers to be switching him left when we have players like Broady on the bench that play on the left usually and he has shown really good form when given the chance in several games 🤷‍♂️

Clarke I just feel sorry for tbh, he’d have been better off staying where he was.

Our throw ins are awful, nobody moves for the ball, it looks like we are playing a tactic, right up until the point we chuck it in and it goes to an oppo player, baffling to say the least! Did you notice how much better Townsends were today? Actually targeted a man and hurled it, at pace, straight to where it was meant to go 👍

Hutchinson’s 1st season in the prem, it’s a step up has he been perfect in the 10, no but for me there’s signs he’s learning, maybe not at the rate required for the premier league.

J Clarke - £15 million+ - hugely successful Champ season, but now being asked to play a different role and it doesn’t suit him, he can’t do it.

Maybe Clarke at this moment in time isn’t up to it.

Phil G - £22 million - played virtually all his games on the right, so naturally, first start, we stick him on the left, he looked totally lost today, unsurprisingly.

He’s had one start, not played loads new system hardly a surprise!

Hutch played most games for us last season at RW (using RW/LW as easier to abbreviate, but right and left 10 in our set up) where he saw most of his success and made his mark on us all, other times he played LW successfully, also played a much smaller amount of games in the middle, mainly due to injuries in the side. Why take such a talent, who has performed brilliantly at a certain role (winger/10) and force him into a different role, that so far, is proving to be a highly unsuccessful transition? It’s a real bad call IMO, yet we persist with it.

Clarke just isn’t working at all, seemed like an odd signing and has proved to be so far, he isn’t up to the job he is being asked to do, which isn’t something he’s used to doing. Harness was similar, a winger pushed into 10 and never transitioned effectively, hence became a bit part sub.

Phil G just looked uncomfortable on the left and like I said earlier, our issues have been on the right side of the pitch, so why are we playing him on the left side? Makes no sense to me.

Has been the case for a few seasons now.

Philogene has always played his best football on the left and struggled on the right hand side.

Ask Hull fans.

Poll: Will Paul Lambert be Ipswich Town manager on the final day of this season ?

Edited OP, he’s played a lot of games on the right side last couple of seasons, but inaccurate to describe as “all his games” certainly, he actually appears to have been very interchangeable in his career to date, not sure if that’s good, or bad? Point I didn’t allude to until further down the thread, was that our issues have been on the right side of the pitch and I had assumed that’s where he would be playing, massive disrespect to Broady IMO, he’s looked very competent when he has been played, albeit, he’s found it very difficult to get into goal scoring positions and put the ball in the net, but that’s no different to anybody else and is a consequence of how deep we have been lying. What he has done, is look very comfortable beating a man (something sorely lacking from anyone else) and has played some lovely balls, which again, have been in short supply from anywhere else.

I’d never noticed it in league one but looking back I guess we were never pressed that high to have any issues and 90% of the time could take a quick throw to a CB to get the ball back in play early.

That's something a decent coach should improve on the training ground. The club is going to spend millions on ours to please the coach but competent coaching is about people not bricks and mortar. Still, ours is still relatively new and definitely inexperienced at this level so give him time.
