He's already made more saves than Muric this season just in his announcement video.

...

Kidding.

I like the way he just catches the ball with his gloved hands

Smiling and talking. An immediate upgrade on Saturday's incumbent.

It does make you wonder what happened in the summer, I assume Palmer would have been available for a similar amount then? I know every decision is easy with hindsight, but how did we decide to pay 5x more (and probably more in wage) for Muric then, only to make this transfer now?

Muric seemingly cruised to the Championship title for Burnley with the highest save percentage, second most accurate passing, and second best high claim record. Triple threat. He then posted the highest save and high claim percentage in the Premier League, achieved over 10 games. He was also 1st for goals prevented above expectation in the PL, which doesn't always track with save percentage. He was in healthy positive territory for this statistic in the Championship too, maybe 5th or 6th.

In retrospect, Burnley's decision to prioritise a £15m outlay on James Trafford last summer is an amber flag. Statistically Muric had a very strong season, yet Burnley had seen enough in his play to feel expensive improvement was the right course despite limited funds.

Trafford had a terrible debut season and was replaced by Muric for the final third, who played brilliantly for the most part, and that complicated the picture. But Muric tempered his great performances with a couple of high-profile errors, the kind to raise serious eyebrows, and sadly it's that side which we've seen most of.

Perhaps if we'd focused less on data and more on watching, we'd have seen more chaotic play here, more fortunate moments there, and it would have been enough to put us off the numbers on the page. Equally, it's possible that we did see ample footage and he's just had a disastrous spell for us, sadly.

Palmer and Cooper were available in the summer and both would have been much cheaper, so there's little suggestion we tried to sort this position on the cheap. We probably thought we were buying a diamond that only needed a small polish. At the same time, £10m is one of our smaller transfer fees this season. It wouldn't have been expensive for a decent PL keeper, had we found that, even moreso a 25 y-o one.

That's a great summary.

I think your 'small polish' is one of those unquantifiable things which you have to take a punt on sometimes, so I don't think there's any error been made.

I also still have hopes that we can find a way to do that polishing, because there is an excellent keeper underneath in Aro. But it's the hardest place on the pitch in which to come back from a sustained wobble, and is a real test of character when you are the only player out there wearing the gloves and so much depends on you.
