Alex Palmer to Ipswich Town: The Athletic 500 transfer ratings 07:05 - Feb 5 with 2788 views | SitfcB | Found this bit interesting after seeing comments about him not fitting in with our style… Tactical fit – 36/50 Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna demands a lot from his goalkeepers in possession, and Palmer appears equipped to carry that out. This season, Ipswich’s Arijanet Muric has been one of the Premier League’s busiest goalkeepers in possession, taking an average of 38.3 touches per 90, which is comparable with Palmer’s rate of 43.1 one division down in the Championship. Palmer (41.1) has attempted more passes per 90 than Muric (35.2) and was completing them at a similar rate (71.2 to Muric’s 71.7). The share of short, medium and long passes are alike too, indicating his distribution, at worst, should be at a similar level to that of Muric. Naturally, the 28-year-old may face better high-press organisation now he is in the Premier League, which can make it more difficult for a goalkeeper to play out from the back effectively, but he has typically been composed in possession for West Brom. Aside from his ability on the ball, Palmer is a reliable and steady goalkeeper who rarely makes mistakes. If those attributes translate to the Premier League, this will be a deal Ipswich fans look back on as a bargain. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6111038/2025/02/04/alex-palmer-ipswich-town-tra [Post edited 5 Feb 9:04]

I had assumed that Palmer would be back up to Muric, but if this is correct it suggests it could have been shrewd business enabled by injury, that may help us be a bit more effective/competitive at this level.

Well Muric definitely needs competition. Whether that has an effect on him remains to be seen. It's easy for those unaware of what attributes a keeper needs to criticise. When I hear pundits on various football channels saying " The keeper should have saved that" or his positioning was wrong when those talking were defenders, midfielders or forwards when they were playing astonishes me. What do they know about goalkeeping. I have some idea as I used to be a goalkeeper. Not professional, but the same things apply. You make three great saves and miss one and you are a villain. A forward can miss three chances and take one and he's a hero. Nothing shows up more than a goalkeeper error.

I never thought he'd be back up after seeing McKenna's face Saturday then the interview,

They say he is not very good with his feet and like Muric takes an age to release the ball. Muric has a very high pass completion rate on

I know my memory is pretty shot these days, but I thought he was one of the best keepers we faced last season. Was excellent at claiming crosses in his box and thought he was decent enough when playing out from the back too. Was actually surprised we didn’t go for him last summer as thought he would’ve been a very decent option at a reasonable price (knowing our dealings maybe we were and just took 6 months to get him like we normally do).
