Different goverment, same moronic decisions? on 11:05 - Feb 8 with 910 views | Guthrum | Flood plains - large flat areas unencumbered with older settlements - make for easy development land, especially in hillier areas of the country. If you want to build 500 houses at once, you need a very big, fairly level field. The bigger problem is that, having surrounded new estates with flood protection, excess water has to go somewhere else, flooding other people.

If some unfortunate sods are left with uninsurable properties - not their problem. We can add it to the other 10k built in flood zones each year.
Different goverment, same moronic decisions? on 21:48 - Feb 8 with 656 views | Swansea_Blue | It’s not the brightest idea. And given that the largest areas on that flood risk map are in coastal regions, it’s only going to get worse as sea level rises because feckwits keep building more runways. There’s an arrogance of engineering involved in all of this too. Guidelines and legislation allow for what are effectively loopholes around planning guidance if you can put mitigation measures in place. Sounds good in theory, but we’ve seen modern developments flooding time and time again. In theory we can protect every house, but it would be expensive. Developers don’t like additional expense.

There is rightly lots of effort put into sea defences to protect from SLR and more intense storm surges as well as work on riverine flooding, but the thing that can be very hard to forecast is pluvial flooding which as we saw with the cut-off lows in Europe that can result in mass loss of life. Paul Davies and Hayley Fowler both confirmed recently at a seminar just how close we have been to a Parliamentary Enquiry type event and the atmosphere is only getting more conducive to these types of hazards.
