Premier League Thoughts 15:51 - Feb 23 with 1014 viewsZonderman

Sure it has been every bit as tough as we knew it would be. To be honest the fact that we have been bang in touch with survival before this weekend is incredible bearing in mind the circumstances of the clubs rapid rise.
Part of me feels I should now be telling myself that VAR is rubbish, as has been the refereeing on occasions, and it is just utterly dispiriting supporting a club trying to bridge the chasm that exists between the top two leagues BUT in truth I have absolutely loved it. I am going to miss it enormously when (in all likelihood) relegation happens.
I am fortunate to have been in attendance at every game this season (by the way this makes me no more or less a supporter than anyone else) and I have really enjoyed seeing my club back at the top table and playing a part in such an amazingly high quality competition.
Whether it is seeing Town represented in the Panini Premier League sticker album or the thrill of Town being on MOTD, I have taken real delight in the reality of the achievement we all celebrated last May.
Despite yesterday’s gut punch of a result, I am still chuffed at how competitive we have managed to be and how my club has represented itself in the international public glare.
I am still as excited as anything to be going to Old Trafford on Wednesday and I am determined to enjoy every second between now and the end of the season.

In the event of relegation, I hope so much that we manage to chart a path back to this league as soon as possible because, for me, there is no better place to be watching football.

I've enjoyed seeing us back up here and taking the game to the big clubs but as a league it's not a patch on the championship. That's proper football and competitive. Characterful grounds, great atmospheres, pride in local clubs. The PL is pretty insipid in comparison.

Slowly the game is being ruined by VAR, money, the US sports model, hyper commercialisation etc.

The championship with 3pm sat and 7.45 midweek an antidote to that but even that's being taken away.

Wait, you’ve loved VAR? You filthy pervert.

It’s been awful, the Cov game was so much more enjoyable with out it.

We’re not where we are because of the officials, although they have cost us a couple of points.

However, the officiating has been abysmal, no better than the Strouds and Wards of the Championship.
They don’t make decisions and wait for VAR to do it for them.

In the cold light of day, I’m sure the Prem and the officials are not corrupt and deliberately giving the decisions to the bigger club in the match, but when you see some of the decisions, it makes you wonder.
The Chelsea goal against us that was eventually disallowed was clearly offside from the beginning, it was like they were finding a reason to give it. The Villa first goal last night was clearly onside, and didn’t need the time it took to decide, and Everton should have had a penalty.

Without VAR, if the ref makes a mistake, he makes a mistake. But when the VAR ref gets it wrong as well, words fail me.

We’ll have less Saturday 3pm games next season if we go down.

Ah got you!!!

Next season if we're in the champ looks terrible. Aren't half the games now 12.30 for TV?

I don't enjoy watching Ipswich losing, but this season hasn't seen any surprises for me. Watching some of the players that have come here has been wonderful after years of playing - and often losing to - 'nobodies' and even more so for my young boys to witness it after they started coming regularly during our League 1 days and essentially conditioning them to not expect the superstars they saw on the big screen to come here anytime soon.

Generally we have competed, although that aspect has diminished in recent weeks as Premier League class from the opposition has told (Southampton aside) and I don't feel like we've not deserved our shot at this.

More importantly though, this should just be the platform to launch this club into the future. We are no longer the poverty-stricken outsiders, we are on the inside and whilst of course coming straight back up is anything but a given, if we do go down we ought to be in a really strong position to mount a promotion push.

Everything about this club is going in the right direction and this season has been a novelty which hopefully helps establish us as a Premier League club in the coming years.

But I don't like VAR!

Completely agree.

Can't get on with the brigade of people who have decided PL football isn't for them just because we lose most weeks.

Being able to see the players you watched for 3/4 years (about 7 years in case of LW) compete against the country's best teams and best players, and have some great quality moments and a couple of famous wins, has been really enjoyable.

Plus we've been able to see some of the best players perform at Portman Road. I know you don't want to see them score goals and do well against you, but that's partly why we pay the ticket prices we do.

Poll: Pick a goal to win the derby in stoppage time...
