Why not? 09:35 - Mar 19 with 1647 views | gramps | If after the games with Bournemouth and Wolves we are so far behind that there is little chance of staying up, why not try some of the ideas put forward on here in recent weeks. Move Davis forward and bring Townsend in, Try Hirst and Delap together.Play Clarke, Philogene and Hutchinson in their favoured positions. Keep the same back four for a few games - perhaps give Slicker a chance in goal. If this is perhaps too soon to try this, then wait until we have played the next 3 very hard matches after Wolves before letting the reins loose!

And £3m+ of additional prize money for finishing 18th vs 19th. That’s probably Omari & Philogene’s salary for next season, so not to be sniffed at.

I am now wondering - is there any difference in the parachute money for the three relegated clubs? Or is it all evens? I know I could do some Googlin', but will give someone else the opportunity to show off their knowledge.

I think we will see very, very little deviation from McKenna, because prepping for next season is playing his system anyway. And as pointed out above, the difference between finishing 18th & 19th is financially pretty huge.

That’ll be the same irrespective of where we finish, just the prize money that’s about £3m per place.

To be fair, his whole rationale of experimenting is that the season is effectively over and results don't matter. So probably best not to 'experiment' if £3m is on the line. [Post edited 19 Mar 10:20]

Playing two left back with one in front of the other doesn't work. England tried it with Bridge and Cole, as have many other clubs and countries. It doesn't work. Davis needs to be converted first, but I can't see that happening. Townsend is the better defender, but Davis in the Championship last season was brilliant, so a difficult choice for McKenna going into next season. If a good offer came in for Davis, I would accept it, as virtually all of it is profit.

I read that as playing David Hirst up top. We could have used dad in 1993 that's for sure. Marshall and Hirst would have been a pair!

It's an absolutely moot point. The whole structure of the team is based on the left side almost being off-balance, with Davis playing as an attacking-wing-back, and the attacking 'winger' on that side going inside as a second 10. Playing two wide left players goes totally against that, and I very much doubt McKenna entertains it. As you see when Townsend plays - like you say, he's a decent defender, but doesn't get forward enough and there is just a void on the left. Even seen players just pass the ball out of play to the left, expecting Townsend to be where Davis is, but no one being there at all. That being said, I do wish we saw a bit more flexibility in the formations to accommodate certain players, but McKenna sticks to his guns and that is his earned right. We can't question him too much - he's a miracle worker in reality
