RFK Jr is turning out as expected then 12:54 - Mar 23 with 4826 viewsStokieBlue

This was expected but his views are so far removed from the actual science that it's hugely dangerous to have him as US health secretary.

He wants to use a "let it rip" strategy with regards to Bird Flu, something which the experts have said won't work (birds die too quickly to get antibodies) exposing more humans to infected birds and creating more opportunities for the required mutations to arise to make the jump to humans [1].

Measles is now spreading quickly throughout Texas and other parts of the country where vaccination rates are struggling to reach herd immunity and a child actually died for the first time in a decade. RFK Jr still promotes the fallacy that the MMR vaccine is unsafe which isn't helping with vaccination rates and instead he's pushing completely unproven treatments such as cod liver oil [2].

Hugely disappointing and actually dangerous both for people in the US and further afield.

Restaurants ditch seed oils amid Robert F Kennedy's attempt to make America health

SALES of beef dripping are soaring as Britons ditch cooking oils amid a US campaign over their alleged negative health impact.

Amy Moring, the founder of food start-up Hunter & Gather, said it had benefited from a 300pc increase in sales of its beef tallow – another word for dripping – since September. The company is on course to sell more than 40 tons of the ingredient this year. It comes amid a growing backlash against seed oils such as canola, corn, soya bean and sunflower.
Concerns over their impact on people’s health have been popularised by social media influencers and politicians in the US. Tiktok has been flooded with videos claiming that they are bad for consumers and cause inflammation in the body, in some cases racking up tens of thousands of views.

Wilfred Emmanuel-jones, founder of The Black Farmer, said: “There’s definitely
a trend away from the vegetable oils. We notice that people are not buying those products as they would have done in the past.”

“I’m glad that people are now actually resorting to things like beef dripping, because it always was the case that there’s nothing wrong with it.

“It is absolutely delicious. I was brought up on it, it was quite standard fare to have beef dripping on bread, dripping on toast – it was the common thing in my day. So I’m glad to see that people are now resorting back to it.”

Perhaps the most prominent critic of seed oils is Robert F Kennedy Jr, the new US health secretary who has pledged to “Make America Healthy Again”

He claims that Americans are being “unknowingly poisoned” by mass-produced seed oils.
His comments have inspired restaurants chains across America, such as the burger brand Steak ’n Shake, to begin frying their chips in beef tallow. However, while demand for the product is soaring, experts say there is no scientific evidence that seed oils are less healthy than animal fats.

Tim Spector, the founder of the Zoe nutrition app, said: “Beef tallow is certainly not healthier than seed oils. There’s a huge and unwarranted backlash against seed oils at the moment, but it’s just utter nonsense.”

“WE’VE RFK’D our fries,” the chief operating officer of American fast food chain Steak ’n Shake proudly proclaimed, as he announced that the 90-year-old company would begin cooking chips in beef tallow rather than seed oils earlier this year.

At any other point in history, a recipe change like this would be unremarkable. But it was emblematic of a major shift in America’s food industry under Donald Trump.

Restaurants across the US are ditching seed oils such as rapeseed and canola in favour of beef tallow – or dripping – and other traditional fats amid concerns over their alleged impact on health.

Robert F Kennedy Jr – known as RFK Jr – Trump’s new health secretary, has claimed seed oils are “poisoning” the nation’s populace and “betraying” its children, calling them “one of the most unhealthy ingredients that we have in foods”.

These claims have confounded nutritionists and other experts, the majority of whom insist seed oils are perfectly safe. But that has done little to quash a burgeoning backlash.

That’s crazy. But for Trump and his fellow loons, since when did evidence or people who specialise in anything count? - see thread on Trump’s war on Fed Reserve Chair Powell.

I actually had some chips cooked in dripping at the Shropshire living museum Blists Hill (interesting place) near Coalbrookdale for the first time in years. They were great. Certainly filled you up, but you could hear the old arteries going ‘oh noooooo!’. Not something you’d want every day.

There’s a reason why people dropped dead on average at 60/65 and life style and work was only part of it.

Isn’t Trump’s favourite food McDonalds? I dread to think what RFKs is, beyond the mountain of roadkill he has in his freezers. Idiot.

As with most things, nuance is everthing. This article seems to suggest its a case of "seed oils versus beef dripping" and/or "plant based versus animal based" like its an either or choice.

What about olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, butter, ghee? Are they not options? Can we not use a mixture of different fats and oils for diversity? or do we just have to turn it into a seed oils versus beef tallow debate?

There is also no reference to the big variation in quality within each option. You can get organic cold pressed rapeseed oil or you can get cheap heavily proccessed 'vegetable oil' which is a blend of different low quality oils cobbled together. Both are "seed oils" but are going to be a world apart in terns of quality.

I can't stand articles like this to be honest, so lacking in detail, nuance and integrity and clearly designed to divide and get people 'choosing one side or the other'.

As for Tim Spector, a very questionable contribution from him. I would imagine he knows full well ( or at least he should do ) that an organic grass fed beef tallow will be generally healthier than a heavily processed non organic vegetable oil and yet he comes out with a ridiculously bland statement such as “beef tallow is certainly not healthier than seed oils" Which particular seed oils are you talking about Tim? What evidence are you presenting to back up your claim? Where is the beef tallow versus seed oils study?

No mention at all eiher that many seed oils have a higher quantitiy of Omega 6 and that most of us need more Omega 3 in our diets and less Omega 6. Again, nuance is everything and sorely lacking.

I think the issue is that RFK is promoting something that doesn't seem to be backed up by evidence.

As it is, Zoe produced an article a year or so ago which looked into this matter in some depth, so rather harsh to single out Tim Spector who has no control as to what goes in a Telegraph article.

EDIT: interesting Wikipedia page on seed oil misinformation which suggests it was Joe Rogan who kick-started this issue, and that (as I suspected) it is an issue popular on the political right.
