I learn Spanish off and on, and today received an email from a Spanish language firm which said the following.
BREAKING NEWS
The Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) has announced a sweeping reform to modernize the Spanish language. Starting May 2025, all accent marks will be eliminated to enhance digital communication and language learning. The implementation schedule includes:
- Phase 1 (May 2025): Elimination of accent marks on á, é, and ó in all written documents
- Phase 2 (July 2025): Removal of ú and í accents, including the distinctive ü
- Phase 3 (September 2025): All question marks and exclamation points simplified to single characters
- Phase 4 (December 2025): The letter ñ will be replaced with 'ny' in all official communications
As I read it, I thought about contacting my son who is studying Spanish in Spain, when I read the following.
