Johnson 21:30 - Apr 2 with 4000 viewstonybied

I just don't see it at all with him. I thought Wet Spam were disappointed to lose him on a free?

Bit of a harsh thread IMO.

I'm not saying Ben Johnson is the answer to all our prayers but its been a real stop start season and not an easy one to find his stride. Not to mention being utilised in a different role, learning the tactical aspects of that etc.

I don't think he's done badly on the whole, he's shown promise in a number of games and while he's clearly not the common denominator his starts have coincided with some of our better performances. He's only started 9 league games but we're averaging 1ppg through them vs. half that when he hasn't. I think he's given us a little more protection when he's started in that hybrid role. Wednesday's win, the win at Spurs, the draws against Villa, Fulham and Leicester which were among our better performances. Even the defeats against Arsenal and Muff I thought we played pretty well. He also started and played really well in the FA cup draw at Forest.

He's only started 2 debacles, the thumping at home to City and defeat at West Ham.

He's one of those profiles who you think is quite experienced given he's 25 and been around the premier league for years but I imagine if you look at league starts he's probably not actually had that many in his career as he never went out on loan to cut his teeth. If Axel moves on in the summer personally I would hand Johnson the right back shirt and tell him its his to make his own. He's not as good a 1-on-1 defender but he needs a decent run of games, and at Championship level I think he'd be able to get forward pretty well.

He is not quite strong enough to hold players off or win those duels. His passing under pressure is almost never succesful. He also goes to sleep.

His cross field balls are excellent.

I don't disagree he's been sloppy in possession. I think in his defence some of that might be down to sharpness and match fitness, which is quite understandable of someone who has started 7 or 8 games in the last 6 months.

Taylor is similar, there's a player in there but I really do sympathise when he's started 3 or 4 games in his whole Town career. Its really hard to find your stride and get that sharpness up, especially to the pace of the premier league and against opponents we're facing every week.

I don't understand the stick that Johnson gets and thought he played a crucial part in our victory on Wednesday.

The EADT journos take the same view as me about him at Bournemouth.

Stuart Watson "Ben Johnson ran himself into the ground at right wing-back. Backed up by the fit-again Axel Tuanzebe, those two's combined athleticism and aggression shut down the threat of Bournemouth's left-sided danger duo of Milos Kerkez and Antoine Semenyo."

Alex Jones "A good return to the starting lineup. Doubled up with Tuanzebe to handle Semenyo, but offered a lot going forward, with some really nice touches in the final third. His passing range is really impressive, but he was shattered by full time." Rating 7

I'm not really giving him stick. I can see that he clearly is a willing runner, but I don't see much else in him.

I struggle to understand what his strongest position is. He is too weak and seems to lack the concentration to play the hybrid RB/RCB position. He offers little than running in the RWB/RAM position, he's mostly lost once he passes the halfway line and he losses the ball or plays the ball back to Tuanzebe or a CM when they're under pressure which nearly always results in us losing possession or going all the way back to Palmer.

My OP is just meant to state that he has been an extremely disappointing signing, in my eyes. He has more PL experience than most of the rest of the squad added together but has mostly looked as lost as most of our rookies this season. Who knows what the guy is going through and why he's struggled but I was under the impression signing him was a bit of a coup, which hasn't been the case.

I hope that things click for the guy and he goes on to be one of our better players next season but for this season I'd say he's been the biggest flop of the permanent signings, considering the reputation and experience he came with.

On a good night he was by far and away our weakest link. Agree I haven’t seen much from him to warrant anything tbh. But on that right side we have been so unlucky losing Ogbene and Burns and Now Hutch whom I suspect should replace Johnson when fit.

Terrible luck with losing Ogbene and Burns, but Johnson is nowhere near good enough at this level in their absence.
touch: good
passing: generally good
pace: among the worst of any outfield player in the PL

West Ham, Man City, Bournemouth (home), etc left wingers have torn him to pieces which led to goals conceded. You can get away with zero pace in the middle of the park, but not out wide when you have defensive responsibilities. Beckham had no pace, but he wasn't asked to defend. Johnson is decent, but not world-beating with the ball. Not good enough to be among the three 10s, but he's better there than wing-back or fullback, as being skinned doesn't lead to goals conceded as often. Maybe losing half a stone will accelerate him, but a technically gifted wing-back with awful mobility is of limited value in the PL.

Second only to Muric among McK's worst signings in the past year.
