'If Town finish 18th in the Premier League, then they would get a bye from round one of the Carabao Cup if an odd number of teams qualify for European competition.'
I don't think this is possible. It's guaranteed that at least eight English clubs will be in Europe next season. If nine clubs qualify:
- You'd need 23 teams to get through to the third round, to make it up to 32 in total with the nine 2025/26 Premiership clubs in Europe. - So, you'd need 46 teams to be in the second round. If 18th in the 2024/25 Premiership + 11 other 2025/26 Premiership enter at that stage, that only leaves space for 34 qualifiers from the first round. - That means only 68 teams can enter the first round, three short of the total needed.
I'd assume instead that: - 2nd and playoff winner in the 2024/25 Championship would have to enter the first round. That's 74 teams in total, giving 37 match winners. - In the second round, those 37 match winners get added to the nine remaining Premiership teams not in Europe. 46 total = 23 winners. - In the third round, those 23 get added to the nine in the Premiership who are playing in Europe, giving 32 total.

TLDR version: we’re going out on penalties at Barnet.
We lose to Chesterfield at home. Paul Cook doing a dance on the touchline starts a riot which escalates into Brexiteers throwing stuff in Clacton 'cos Nigel Farage and then it spills out into the East End where some whelk stand gets turned over and now it's gone all Daily Mail with the immigrants and boats and stuff and Trump posted sumtin on Troth that The UK are eating babies and now it's World War 3.
You couldn't make it up.
Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

That is what's happened in previous seasons, but you may have a point that with so many more clubs likely to be in Europe they may have to rethink the first round.

In previous seasons when this has happened, there were only seven teams in Europe so they needed to get an extra team into the third round, hence the bye. That can’t happen this season due to the extra Champions League place for England - if it’s an odd number (or any number more than 8), they’ll have the opposite problem of needing to get fewer teams into the third round.

Indeed, just reading that up to 12 teams could be in Europe!
