"Shark-skin" developed for planes that can cut fuel usage 11:23 - May 2 with 738 viewsStokieBlue

This is pretty cool, it's a coating which can be applied to existing planes to stop small vortices being created which increase drag.

Currently it reduces fuel usage by 4% but they are hoping for 10% with refinements. That might not sound like a lot but it's millions of tonnes of carbon emissions over the lifetime of a plane and given flying less is unlikely this is a good incremental solution.

Or finding one big enough. How many sharks will we need for all the planes? Is it all sharks or is great white skin better than nurse shark or hammerhead. So many questions need answering here.

Even 4% is a significant step forward when you think about the sheer volume involved. 10% would be very good news.

Individuals have a role to play, but technological advancements like this are what we need on a massive scale.

Broadly similar to the dimples on a golf ball, which allow it to fly further. But in this case more precisely engineered thanks to modern technology.

It's a problem which aeronauticists have been struggling with since quite early days of powered heavier-than-air flight.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

‘You’re going to need a bigger shark.’

Surely there are bigger fish to fry than this? (Doesn't look like there are actually).
