this trade deal on 16:16 - May 8 with 641 views | DanTheMan | US beef coming in doesn't fill me with confidence... Actually, it says "virtually all products". Even less confidence there. [Post edited 8 May 16:17]

Aren’t UK farmers completely against meat imports from the USA?

I think they are if there is not a parity in animal welfare standards etc. and if it's only one way. No detail yet so maybe we have that but I won't hold my breath.

This may just be a bit of theatre, given that the options are limited by Trump's capriciousness and vindictiveness so, although I have no view of the providence of this account, it is highly likely: NEW: US & UK officials tell CNN that the trade deal will be “limited in scope, heavy on future commitments & leave the existing 10% universal tariffs in place on virtually all goods”.
It’s a concept of a deal. — News Eye (@newseye.bsky.social) 2025-05-08T12:45:28.583Z

Think they just said UK farmers have full access to the US, but we need to see the detail.
this trade deal on 16:34 - May 8 with 544 views | MJallday | maybe the detail will be forthcoming over the next few weeks, but with all the fanfare this has been given, i would have expected something other than mutual backpatting and "special relationship" rhetoric this truely was a non-event.

All about the optics, baby. Don't think about the practicalities. Hand Trump his press conference "big wins" and you keep him onside.

Their agriculture secretary said: Looking ahead, Rollins says "all of the meats, all of the produce" are being considered for agricultural export. Now whether that is part of this deal or another deal, I don't know. But I really hope we aren't going down this road. EDIT: Although we're saying we're not relaxing standards https://www.gov.uk/government/news/landmark-economic-deal-with-us-saves-thousand Guess we just wait for the detail. [Post edited 8 May 16:56]

It should be near impossible to be competitive on beef if the standards are the same, because of the import costs. I am sceptical. The fundamental logic of shipping dead animals half way round the world when we can grow our own is pretty warped from a carbon footpring perspective as well.
this trade deal on 19:04 - May 8 with 258 views | vilanovablue | I think it's all a bit hollow and is technically an agreement rather than an actual deal as yet. Sounds like a lot of hot air for Trump and Starmer to look good because they're both a bit desperate.

The government’s own press release suggests ‘There will be no weakening of UK food standards on imports.’ I would assume we are still tied to EU standards in order to maintain access to that more important market - that gives me some comfort. It does read like a propaganda piece, but as others have pointed out, it’s hard to see how any beef exports either way are economically viable.
this trade deal on 19:27 - May 8 with 217 views | BloomBlue | Trump required a deal to cheer up the markets. It didn't need a lot of detail, it just had to show the markets deals can be reached before the 90 day deadline is reached. It's all about the markets. He brushed off the markets previously, but then quickly reverted after various financial areas dropped, markets bonds etc. The markets have started to express concerns over the last week about when will trade deals finally be agreed - boom, rabbit out of the hat moment
