Yes they can, although normally if they disagree with a bill they will request changes and send it back to the commons.

One area some in the Lords apoear to be unhappy with is if you are told you only have 6 months to live a Doctor can ask you about assisted dying. There appears to be concern with that and they believe that could put pressure on the individual. Some want that removed and no Doctor should ask, it should only come from the individual. Although obviously until the bill is voted on we wont know who is for or who is against.

One cycle of chemotherapy: £3,885. Assisted suicide: £183.

We know how this is going to end.

I agree that no Doctor should ask and I hope that is in the final bill.

I had to deal with my mother pleading to die for 10 months.

I whole heartedly agree with the sentiments of this bill. I just hope that they have the safety side covered.

My thoughts are that something needs to be done. If this is it then time will tell.

No we don’t. The idea that the authorities would push for the ‘cheap option’ is wrong. Nobody would accept that. The debate in the HoC is evidence of that.

There are people out there who want their inheritance and are happy for somebody else to get rid of their relations to get their mitts on it. But my guess is that scumbags like that are in as much a minority as Shipman who for reasons beyond me decided to play god.

So we don’t know how this is going to end. I know how it ends if we don’t improve what we can do for people at the end of their lives.

There is nothing wrong with people deciding they’re done. Sometimes you don’t need words. Actions will tell you all you need to know. There’s nothing wrong with reducing or lessening suffering when there is only one outcome, in my view. No other criteria comes into it for me. It’s about the principle, because this option is only going to be enacted in a minority of situations. One size doesn’t fit all.

The first thing I’d do is to reduce the threat of litigation on the medical people doing the hard work. Yes, there needs to be controls to avoid a Shipman, but I’ve no problem with a little discretion being used when there’s nothing left but pain, to ensure that pain is taken away.

Ever heard somebody tell you that every hair on their head, every cell in their body is on fire? That breathing was agony? I have. That person in their agony tried to end it themselves but didn’t have the strength to do it. A member of staff had to sit in the room day and night in case she feebly tried again. Eventually the morphine/drugs lack of food and drink (body shutting down) put her out of it and she died a few days later.

Everyone tried for her, but were always limited by what they were allowed to do without endangering themselves legally. Was there a better option? Not then, but my hope is there is in the future.

You could say what’s a few days, weeks or months? Well, for those who think that I’ll ask the same question when you see a loved relation of yours die like that. I repeat, we can do better.

It's not about money. It's about dignity and those facing a certain death having the choice. Having watched two family members die horror deaths, I know both would have opted for this had they had the choice
