US political divergence - third party? 11:33 - Jun 22 with 400 views | NthQldITFC | With the seemingly ever more entrenched (and childish) positions in US politics surely there is both a need and a demand for a third party. Such a thing may be hard to get going, but could eventually start to provide a little moderation in that sorry country. Even if someone as batsh!t crazy (and rich and able to fund such a venture) as M*sk was to set something off and running, could it prove a good thing? Or is Tr*mp effectively doing a similar thing by upsetting a lot of his supporters?

RFK wouldn't have got near the Whitehouse had he ran on instead of hitching up ro Trumps wagon. In most countries including here, even if dominated by main parties there have always been alternatives that siphon votes here and there, something the US has never really had, there was Bull Moose in the the 1910s bur that really fed of the popularity of Teddy Roosevelt and never looked like delivering a president or serving senetor/congressman. Similarly the Tea Party a few years back gained some minor traction but was really just a nuty republican offshoot that IMO laid a lot the groundwork for getting Trump nominated and subsequently faded. 3rd party candidates have often been single issue and lack rhe fundraising apparatus of the big 2, meaning usually only extremely wealthy individuals can do it. It would take someone with huge force of personality to manage it in the states, with the funds too, there aren't the same limitations to spending as we have here. Musk would be the sort that might try but that would be as bad as Trump, though given isn't American Born I think he couldn't run anyway. Im not sure there is the desire there, I think it takes too much money and we need to hope buyers remorse on Trump steers the US back to more sensible ground. If it could happen it could be great for America but I cant see it

Ross Perot made a mild impact a few years back..... Cost him an amazing amount of money and didn't really change anything in a permanent way https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ross_Perot [Post edited 22 Jun 15:47]

Yes, but I would say that this might be an optimum moment for someone to have a go - Republicans a little divided on the foreign involvement issue and some Democrats potentially very frustrated with the inflexibility of their National Committee (i.e inability to move on Biden when it was blindingly obvious he couldn't lead let alone win). Much as I hate M*sk, maybe he'd be peeved enough with Tr*mp to fund something and stay out of it (unlikely perhaps) but it just strikes me that there must be a demand there for another option at the moment.

Would America suffer the same way that this country has in going from what is essentially a two party system to a multi party one ? Where we have a totally unrepresentitive government as compared public opinion. The bottom line is that ours and their system works reasonably well with just two partys. But put more in and those smaller parties are totally under represented. (Or over represented as with the SNP in Scotland).
