We may be getting tactical nukes on British soil on 20:31 - Jun 25 by stonojnr | we dont need carrier suitable variants flying out of Marham, not unless global warming sinks Norfolk. the F-35 is a fifth gen fighter jet, these are the most advanced jets in operation today, it has stealth capability, advanced avionics and integrated computer systems that network command and control across the battlefield the F-35 will likely soon also be able to control UAV drones in flight. The typhoon whilst a capable jet, is not as advanced as the F-35, and is already targeted for replacement by the Tempest/Global Combat Air programme, the French are building the FCAS. 6th gen fighters, because thats where you need to be looking towards, not the past. the last Eurofighters are already being built, the government hasnt ordered any new ones for 15 years, and weve already retired 49 of the tranche 1 type. |
They certainly looks like very capable piece of kit. I’m surprised there isn’t a role for both, as they are quite different strengths, but don’t understand enough about it. Let’s hope there isn’t too much US influence over where and how we can use them!

We may be getting tactical nukes on British soil on 17:18 - Jun 25 by Nutkins_Return | Yes. Or are you suggesting in this pretty horrible current world we should stick our head in the sand and not protect ourselves. Hate the state of the planet now with people like Putin and Trump and the growing threats of China and all that's going on in the world with Iran/Israel/Gaza/Ukraine....but it's all there. There are countries and dictators who really don't like us. |
What exactly do they deter? If anything they make us more of a target should the US drag us in to the kind of conflict where they would be of any use.

There goes much of Norfolk come the big day; as could have happened to Suffolk when we had the biggest arsenal of nukes at Bentwaters back in the original cold war days. The beauty of the trident submarine programme is that you have a moving undetectable (hopefully) arms platform.

We may be getting tactical nukes on British soil on 09:37 - Jun 25 by Guthrum | Yes, they would use refuelling to extend range. Not a significant tactical vulnerability (tanker 'planes will be well protected), plus they could theoretically use another F-35 with a smaller "buddy pack" refuelling system, as they used to do with (particularly naval strike aircraft) in the past. The UK's hose-and-reel system is easier to do that with than the US-style flying boom. |
Not with the A it is a flying boom system so would have to tank from US and NATO tankers. Now this is not such a problem as you might well think as any use in wartime they would be tasked in the NATO air plan that would plan in where and when planes need to refuel. B the jump jet and C navy are not qualified to carry nukes but are probe and drogue so can use our tankers. The twelve A for us will go into the training SQN for all our F35 pilots which should get them through qualifying quicker🤞this will free up the six B’s there to join the other ones coming in the same tranche as the A’s to form another Sqn for deployment. And just to end on a cheery note usually after any period of NBC drills we were reminded that the most important one was ‘don’t forget to practice bending over and kissing your rear goodbye’👍 [Post edited 26 Jun 16:06]
