Is deliberate handball an instant yellow card? 21:57 - Aug 17 with 376 viewsMattinLondon

I could well be wrong but I’ve always thought that deliberate handball was a yellow card offence? Is this the case?

During today’s match, Flynn Downes went to ground and deliberately grabbed hold of the ball thinking that it was a foul, it wasn’t? Just wondered why he wasn’t booked then.

Notionally, all hand ball ought to be deliberate...

But no its not automatically a yellow card.

That series of events was about as clear a yellow card as you can get and yet it wasn't given. First he goes down looking for a free kick (which is technically simulation but is only really a booking when in the penalty area), when that wasn't given he deliberately handled and then grabbed hold of the ball to try to force the referee to give the free kick and stop the game (deliberate handball and dissent rolled into one). He then refused to let go of the ball when the free kick was awarded for handball (deliberately preventing play from continuing which is a yellow card offence the same as kicking the ball away albeit often not carded). He then showed dissent to the referee for not giving the initial free kick. All I can think is the referee had some sympathy and thought he might have misinterpreted the dive and there was a foul after all. Considering he and Armstrong were buying free kicks for nothing offences all afternoon it was poor the ref fell for it there too.

Further, Downes then followed this up with 3 or 4 more fouls in the rest of the half that were awarded against him and yet there was no yellow card for persistent fouling.

Contrast that with the two yellow cards awarded for Taylor and Matusiwa (although if the reported dissent from Taylor is accurate I can understand why the ref was less tolerant of it). However, the Southampton players seemed to get away with a lot more than we did. Maybe we need to learn to be more savvy with going down and conning the ref and not being stupid with the comments when the decisions don't go for us. To be fair, I think Morsy used to be very good with that.
