How often do you think we'll see them in the same team?
One's an out and out goal scorer, hard worker, and someone you can't afford to leave out too often. The other is a leader, knows the manager's ways better than anyone, and makes us tick.
It's an obvious thing to switch the ball when the play is all bunched up in one corner of the pitch, but not many players do it and fewer do it to Chaplin's effect. Just one example of what he brings.
I have to admit there were times early on yesterday where I thought in terms of build up if a weak link existed, it was Szmodics. That was harsh on reflection as he was involved in a lot of good things and his shot against the post was a harder chance than it looked and a lot of players drag them well wide, but he's basically a striker, I don't think he's much of a link player.
Hope we can find a way. Presumably SS on the left and CC in the 10 isn't out of the question at times? |  |

Szmods was excellent I thought. He's a constant menace and those runs through the centre so effective. Can you imagine having him on your shoulder as a defender.
Chappers has great vision and his passing is superior. Plus he's Chappers. What a player.

I don't see any problem at all in our front four chopping and changing a lot within and between games as long as we have the quality and the intelligence across the whole team to do it.
When it's such a big difference in styles as between Chappers and Szmodics, the whole team needs to be aware that we're looking for different patterns, whether that's from the start of a game or when subs are made. I think that's exactly the message that Young came on and gave to Ogbene when Chappers was also coming on on Sunday.
When we've got a suitable alternative to Hirst (whether that's Akpom or another signing - or two!) we'll be pretty set up with capable personnel, and then it's about KMc drumming in the various patterns of play so it's almost instinctive across the whole team. It took a year or so (less maybe?) in L1 and coming up to Championship to achieve last time, but he has better raw materials this time.
The big thing is with our forwards' egos in that they musn't have this "I must be first choice in my position mentality". Assuming we have 10 or so more or less equal, capable, intelligent, well educated and well drilled forwards, the inter- and intra-game rotation and condensing effort into 60 or 40 minute sessions is ideal for the team's results and for the careers of those players.
With regard to your last paragraph, we shouldn't be thinking about shoe-horning players into sub-optimal positions when there are better alternatives in those positions, for the very reason that it's not about 'starting' with the 'best players', it's about using all of your strengths in the best way throughout the game and throughout the season. Agree with that - he played with a lot of energy but first half was poor several times on the ball, and doesn’t link it up anything like Chaplin does. He’ll get a load of goals this year though if he’s fit and makes better forward runs, beyond Hirst, than Chaplin does. |  | | |

Suspect it will be Akpom at times too.
Sammie runs past the striker, and when it’s Hirst, who can get flicks etc, and is a pest that will get goals.
Chaplin drops in, is better on the ball, is a leader, and both work harder than anyone else in the group.
Wouldn’t be bad short term to go for their workrate, and drop Clarke out for a game or two or Philogene who isn’t fit yet. I’d play both at Preston for their energy …, can’t remember the last time Chaplin started back to back games and he needs that rhythm.
There is a system KM plays sometimes where he has the two 10’s …, just wonder if that would be the perfect combo, one to run behind, one to drop in. Both can work channels.
But don’t see KM starting without either of Clarke or Philogene, they have quality, cost a lot etc

Would give us an extra player too…., stick with the four…, and go to a 3 in midfield.
2 double pivots when we haven’t signed anyone to play that role except Azor who looks like he’ll do great, but needs a bit of patience.
Azor Taylor and Jens as a 3, allowing Jens and Taylor to do what they do best, and get on the ball in more forward positions.
Would be more round pegs in round holes I think.
