Moving a Swedish church across town on 09:52 - Aug 19 with 537 views | TIB | Tuning in now…pretty impressive church and to be able to move it. I cycled from Helsinki to Tromso a few years ago and had earmarked to go through Kiruna, took a right at Vittangi though and went up the E45 instead.

Moving a Swedish church across town on 09:53 - Aug 19 with 524 views | urbanpenguin | I have a loose outline of a book about buildings that have been moved, and this is on my spreadsheet of a few hundred examples. I just need a publisher who still does advances. [Post edited 19 Aug 10:01]

How long did it take to cycle from Helsinki to Tromso? Were you going fast enough to avoid the mosquitoes?

The Rushbrooke Arms in Sicklesmere has a rebuilt granary barn (dating from 1480) which was relocated to the current location in the mid-1980s from down the road, I assume not the same way as this Church though. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

If you want a building moved on ice, Gav, you want the Gardner Lake House in Connecticut. In 1895 the owner wanted to move his two-storey house to the other side of the lake so waited until the lake was frozen then started to slide it across. But the ice cracked and overnight the house got more stuck and started to pitch and stayed at an angle, stuck in the ice until spring when the ice started to thaw. It started to sink and came to rest on a 5m deep area, where It became a bit of a tourist attraction with the top floor poking out of the water. People would climb it to fish from, kids would swim its underwater ground floor, and people would ice skate through it when the ice returned. [Post edited 19 Aug 10:47]

Conincidentally, its demise was seemingly contributed-to by (an American) Norwich! "The Falls Mill in Norwich had water rights to the lake. Oblivious to the house-moving venture, overnight it drained substantial amounts of water at the dam, creating space between the ice and the water. This weakened the ice. By morning, the house had broken through." https://eu.norwichbulletin.com/story/news/2009/10/21/historically-speaking-sunke

So the challenge was, find a bike for €50 in Helsinki, train to Kolari and then cycle the 550km to Tromso across six days. Mosquitos were horrific. Saw a bear late one night which meant we kept cycling for a further two hours to avoid camping near him. Highlight, watched Tromso play…featured one time ITFC trialist Aidan Barlow alongside Premier League legend Morton Gamst Peterson. [Post edited 19 Aug 11:16]

Yes, but there are countless places in Connecticut and Long Island with name connections to East Anglia. I did a piece of writing quite a few years ago that spoke about a family that migrated to Southold, Long Island.

I would say they have dug wide footings and filled with concrete to the surface to support it. Lovely church, very Lutheran I would think.
