Had a LinkedIn message yesterday from someone I worked with 5 - 10 years ago. Nice lad, similar age, similar job, and got on well when we worked together, but not spoken since. After replying with the usual 'Yeah I'm well thanks' and some small talk he then replies with:
'Also do you know any good recruiters? I'm currently nearly divorced, unemployed, banned from seeing my kids, in debt and sofa surfing. Times are not good and I really need some support'.
I replied with my sympathies and a couple of recruiters I am happy to introduce him to, not heard back. I'm minded to message again and recommend the Samaritans or such like, but is it too much on that information? Or not really my place as I've hardly spoken to the guy in years.
I'd rather regret doing that and wishing I hadn't than not doing so and wishing I had.

Worst comes to worse he takes offence and doesn’t speak to you again for years. Expressing you’re worried and hope he knows there’s help out there isn’t overstepping.
It’s not like you’re going to start diagnosing or telling him strategies to use etc. |  |

Just follow up and ask whether he had any contact with the recruiters you shared, then add a comment at the end along the lines of (bit rambly but see the context vs the content)
"After we swapped messages, I thought about your message more and while we have not spoken for years I was a little concerned as it seems a very tough place you are in. Take this as just concern for your wellbing and there is no judgement but if you feel you are struggling mentally or emotionally then take care of yourself and reach out to someone like the samaritans or similar, it can be very tough on your own. Obviously you can tell me to mind my own business, but if it was me just knowing that someone cared enough to at least check would help a little." |  | | |
