If everyone had the determination, urgency and nous os Sammie today 21:30 - Aug 23 with 333 viewsredrickstuhaart

We'd have been okay.

Patterns are not automatic and quick yet. Too slow from the back when early balls were on. And utterly powderpuff abject displays on our right hand side. Johnson was caught several times even before the move that ended with the (not remotely justified) pen.

Clarke, however, I think I am done with. Time is required for any player, and coming into a side that knows how it plays, but in the prem when we were on the back foot so much, is tough. But he has had plenty of game time now, and is plainly not able to do what we want him too. Crucially, when Hutch had an off game, he would still work his socks off, and play in a comitted way. Clarke wont even do that. Not working, time to call it a day. Same for Johnson frankly. Just not good enough at any particular position.

I’m not sure that taking both Clarke and Johnson out is needed. I think the problem is the way that Clarke, Johnson and to an extent Taylor fail to work as a unit. I’d keep Clarke and play him with Young and Cajuste.

Or drop Clarke and play with MacAteer, Johnson and Cajuste.

The more I look at the team and shape, the more I feel Taylor is the problem and Cajuste coming in may help more than most think.

I’m probably wrong, but I think we are only a couple of changes/tweaks to get the flow and confidence back.

It beggars belief that this is the first season Johnson has played outside of the PL in his entire career. He seems more like an ageing player from the lower leagues than an experienced 25-year old Prem stalwart.

Shocking so far this season.

I am surprised that you are so tolerant of Clarke- he does the 'jump a bit to look like im trying, but without wanting to actually commit in case it hurts" thing for headers, for a start. Today he could not hold the ball long enough to find a pass, never tried to beat anyone. Had one good moment with a great cross. Otherwise he was absolutely dreadful. Doesnt even chase back to make up for losing it most of the time, leaving an already dodgy Johnson with too much space to cover.

Time is important, but he's been getting regular time for a year now and doesnt seem to be getting any better.

I agree that getting the midfield pairing right is important- but its a bit chicken and egg. If the midfield cant play off the likes of clarke, because it just means losing the ball, their options and the angles created are all removed, making them look bad.
