That is excellent, and I don't mean to do Delap down (how many footballers are adept with cube roots?), but there is a trick to cube roots, making it relatively easy to work out the cube root for cubes up to a million.
For your 5 figure example, there are only 25 numbers which, when cubed, yield a 5 figure number (i.e. 22 cubed up to 46 cubed). So that's only 25 questions to know the answer to. But it's much easier than that in reality.
All cube roots of five digit numbers have only two digits.
If you know 2, 3 and 4 cubed, then you know 20, 30 and 40 cubed (8000, 27000 and 64000). So if you're asked for the cube root of a 5 figure number, you know immediately whether it's 20-something, 30-something or 40-something cubed. For example, if someone asks for the cube root of 15,625, you know it's between 8k and 27k, so the cube root must be 20-something.
Then all you need is the second digit.
To get this, you just look at the final digit of the cube.
Any cube ending in 0,1, 4, 5, 6 or 9 has a cube root ending in exactly the same number. So in these cases, half of the answer is in the question! So we know that the cube root of our 15,625 example must end in a 5.
Taking the 2 from earlier, we know the answer is 25.
Any cube ending in 2 has a cube root ending in 8 (and vice versa)
Any cube ending in 3 has a cube root ending in 7 (and vice versa)
And that's it!
So if you learn 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100 cubed, you can do the cube root of any number up to a million.
And 10 cubed is just 1 cubed with an extra 3 zeros. 20 cubed is just 2 cubed with three zeros, and so on. |  | | |
