It’s all a bit Panto on here at the moment isn’t it? “He’s cra p, oh no he isn’t, oh yes he is” “McKenna is rubbish, oh no he isn’t, oh yes he is” “There is something wrong with the club, oh no there isn’t, oh yes there is” I’ve no idea who is who, except Keno as Widow Twanky. I get it, anticipation was high, we can finally get back to winning games, and turning over the likes of Preston and Derby. But it hasn’t quite worked out that way. But then nothing has, has it? Our transfer window hasn’t worked out the way it should have, players turning us down and transfers dragging on and on, Omari and Delap both departing, expected, but I think the club expected Omari to go far earlier in the window within his release clause, when he didn’t I think the club genuinely thought they might get to keep him here. That decision, to reject Brentford’s offer, upset Omari, who downed tools and that affected the mood in the camp, which I think had already been shocked by the departure of Burgess and Tuanzebe. It’s pretty obvious to me that the club expected both of these would be retained for this season. Add into that, Broadhead and clearly Wolfie wanting out and it starts to add up to what was probably a pretty fed up training ground this summer, just as the players were getting back together. Then take into account the uncertainty for existing players in this window, (we’ve brought in four right sided players, three central midfielders) and the existing players having to play games whilst their seeming replacements get up to speed. Overall It’s not a mix of circumstances within which I would expect amazing performances. This isn’t just about “gelling” it’s about far more than that. Who’s to blame? I don’t know, I think it’s not on just one individual. The club should have been better prepared to lose Burgess and Tuanzebe, and should have moved Wolfy and Broadhead straight out as soon as the window opened when both were clearly unhappy, (unhappiness is a contagion). When we were promoted (both times), the ‘x-factor’ was the squad togetherness. Now we’ve got to rebuild that all over again because of one bad summer, potentially two. The way in which we treat our players seems to have been lost somewhere, that’s on both McKenna and Ashton. But, there’s no way we get back there with the fans not all pulling in the same direction, so give them a bit of time, and hopefully, like any good Panto, it ends quickly, the Hero wins in the end, and everyone goes home happy. Stick with them. COYB | |
