Rumbelows Sprint Challenge participant 14:45 - Sep 11 with 1649 viewsstuvon5000

Hi all.

My name is Stuart Steelyard, and I’m writing a book for Pitch Publishing on the Rumbelows League Cup era (1990–92). One of the most unique features was the Rumbelows Sprint Challenge — where players from every club raced for the title of fastest footballer in the league.

But I could do with your help.

I’ve managed to nail down almost all of the 93 entrants, but I’m missing the player who represented Ipswich Town.

They ran in the Central East heats on Thursday November 14th 1991 at Molineux. Unfortunately there’s no Saint & Greavsie archive footage of the heat they were in.

Ive heard rumours that it might have been Phil Whelan or Chris Kiwomya - but I have no further proof that this was the case.

If anyone remembers who ran for The Tractor Boys, or has a programme/newspaper cutting from late ‘91 that mentions it, I’d love to hear from you

It’ll help me complete the full list for the book — and you’ll be credited for your help!

Thanks so much for your time.

Best regards,
Stuart

ahhh, I hope someone can help with this! Wasn't it someone like Paul Williams (?) from Swansea that won at Wembley? I remember the pictures in shoot or match magazine. Thought it was awesome

A different era but I wonder if there has ever been a quicker British footballer than Malcolm MacDonald.

He ran the 100 metres in 10.9 seconds on Superstars in 1975 which was an Olympic qualifying time.

Ron Pickering reckoned with training he could have brought that down to 10.5 seconds.

From memory it was Phil Whelan, but I have no documentary proof of this. He is now MD of a company called New Red Planet - maybe you could contact him through them to verify?

Something in the memory box says our representative was Chris Kywoma.

Well, it wouldn't have been John Wark at age 35 or something, that is for sure. Logically the club would have put their fastest player forward which would have been Kiwomya.

Johnathan Douglas.

If you're local you could get down to the finish line which he's expected to cross some time this month.

Thanks for this message. I emailed Phil’s place of work like you said. He informed me that he was the representative but had to pull out do to a reserve match that day. So unfortunately Ipswich didnt have anyone running for them. Really appreciate your help to finding this out. 🙏🏻
