Two things I’d change about football immediately… 19:57 - Sep 14 with 2515 viewsThatMuhrenCross

1) Move to 80 mins and stop the clock when the ball goes out of play, like rugby. Instant end to time wasting.

2) Referral based VAR system like cricket. Both captains get two or three reviews. If you get it wrong, you lose a review.

They sometimes used to have police dog demonstrations, where whoever draw the short straw used to run down the pitch in thick pads and the get brought down by the dog/s.

We could do that with agents. But without padding. And use lions.

I used to enjoy that dog demonstration stuff. There was always the hope Muttley would get it wrong and sink his teeth in above the padding or into another unprotected body part. Even the dogs running over obstacles and through little tunnels was good.

One bit of pre match entertainment I did enjoy was the opera bloke before the 1978 Semi Final at Highbury. You know, Nessun Dorma and all that stuff. Now that was impressive and he got a good cheer from the assembled despite the majority, including me, not caring much about opera.

If there aren’t any dogs or fat blokes knocking out a tune, there’s always the crossbar challenge.

They’re probably too precious about the pitch these days. It’d be funny to see them running around with plastic bag picking up after the animals (dogs that is, not opera singers).

It’s one part of the ‘fan experience’ that hasn’t been explored. There must be loads of options to do stuff at half time. Not everyone queues up for 15 minutes to get a warm beer.

That includes me, given I have to drive after the game.

One of the advantages of the West Stand is that you can troop about behind it at HT.

I’m sure there’s all sorts of stuff they could put on if they put their minds to it. Gladitorial fights, mascot gymnastics with a trampoline, food eating contest like Man v Food, circus acts like firing a bloke with a bad moustache out of a cannon. Just needs a few people with more creativity than me to come up with stuff!

1) Level is onside - this affects all, but for VAR they're allowed 1 quick freeze frame if you can't quickly tell if a player is offside or not it's declared as level.
2) Indirect free-kick for accidental handballs in the area. Basically this is for all penalty handballs other than those which stop the ball heading into the net i.e. Luis Suarez vs Ghana

I agree things need to be done about players feigning injury and falling over with the slightest touch but with both it's so hard to determine how much is enough contact or force...

In rugby, they have accelerometers in the mouth-guards, to detect potential head injuries in real time, even if not spotted by the officials. Some similar system could be used to assess the real force of any collision. Like the snickometer in cricket.
