Pope touched the ball (luckily or not) before he touched the player. Someone earlier said he didn't play the ball... course he did, he touched it.
On first viewing looked a certain penalty but getting a touch before the player is a great tackle and is exactly why VAR is brought in. [Post edited 29 Sep 9:08]

He didn't get a touch before the attacker though the attacker played the ball into him as he tried to go past. As others have said, anywhere else on the pitch it was a foul and a probable yellow.
Pope's lack of reaction to the penalty award after it was given should tell you absolutely everything, certainly did me. | |

The ball only travelled 2 yards and the player was clean through for a chance on goal with no keeper, yes he touched the ball but his raised knee stopped the striker going beyond him and probably scoring |  |
