For me, it's time to tweak the formation 12:14 - Oct 19 with 2053 viewscbower

I know there are those who will say McKenna doesn't play with a strict formation and we're very fluid. To some extent I see this but mostly in terms of Leif having the licence to virtually abandon his defensive responsibilities at time and go wherever he wants along the left (and sometimes the left centre) of the park. In terms of fluidity that's all I see to be honest and that can bring a whole heap of problems, making us massively lop-sided and vulnerable to the counter attack.
We effectively play 4231with wide forwards stay wide and looking to cut in, 2 midfielders expected to cover lots of ground and a central striker working his nuts off, trying to bring others into the game. The central 10 is expected to be a creator, pulling the strings, threading balls through, spreading and stretching the play. Rarely are our two pivot midfielders asked to get forward beyond our front 4. Our right back has limited attacking intent and when we go forward, predominantly down the left, the remaining defenders shuffle across to cover. I think that's it but feel free to correct me.
Well by and large this season it's stuttering to say the least. Hirst is consistently isolated. Our right side offers virtually no threat. Yes Philogene has scored five belters and Jack Clarke has 4 to his name but our wide players don’t seem to want to take a man on in general and the threat from players in the central 10 position has been negligible. In central midfield, Matusiwa has grown into his role and for periods in the games he and Cajuste have looked good but in no way consistently. Our substitutions are predictable (sometimes effective) but they rarely, especially when chasing a game , change the pattern if we are struggling.
All of the above would suggest we need to try something different. We simply do not have the correct central 10 in our ranks to play this system. It might not be McKenna's preferred system but maybe 532 or 433 would make better use of our resources, give Leif the ability to get forward but offer him the cover at the back when doing so. Whatever happens, I think something needs to change. Having the ability of Nunez on the bench for 70 minutes game after game ( or alternatively Cajuste) is a waste. Playing either Szmodics or Akpom out of position in the central 10 wastes their talents and having spent all but £30 million on Walle-Egeli and McAteer to virtually ignore the right side as an attacking outlet is another problem.

Whilst true, there's potential issues we've suffered doing that

Having the likes of Davis inverting leaves a gap
having greaves roam led to a conceded goal etc etc

on friday, we kinda needed a third midfielder to able to pretty much look after hackney

Or we needed one of the CMs/CBs to man mark him for the majority of the time and have clear hand offs when he's elsewhere on the pitch. We've had success with both approaches before for specific games.

Wherever you add an extra man you lose coverage elsewhere.

Poll: What % of our full potential are we currently playing at?
