the record in a world cup is apparently 16.7k (brozovic), so 17-20 certainly seems possible (though not as an average figure!)

It is- and at the upper end of the range too. 17-20k is nonsense.

was Matt at his peak/best in all of those 233 games ? nope there were absolutely games where he should have been rested so that he was always at his best, and he could have been an even better player because of it. I mean Dyers career was wrecked because we never game him the recovery/rest time, he needed which resulted in lots of the persistent stress injuries he suffered later on.

but hey go back to the Boys of 81, ask them what cost us the league ? as Im pretty sure its been accepted squad size and the amount of games we had to play was a significant factor.

watch some seventies football back, most of the time they seem like they're running through treacle, pressing and tracking back is vastly inferior!


The key point there is 'running through treacle'. That was hard going and I'm not sure today's pampered footballers could cope with it.

Squad size for certain. When you look atthe calibre of some of the squad players, it was laughable really.
