| None of Jaden, Clarke, Akpom or Szmodics have a single assist this season 12:31 - Nov 5 with 3970 views | NedPlimpton | That's really worrying, isn't it? That suggests that we're very disjointed up front. For all of the possession, XG and 'touches in the opposition box' I still feel that we look toothless. There were signs of improvement last night with a couple of chances you'd expect to be put away being missed, but with 3 away games in a row and the likelihood of a fair bit of squad rotation i'm just not feeling confident that we're suddenly going to be more prolific | | | | |

| None of Jaden, Clarke, Akpom or Szmodics have a single assist this season on 23:51 - Nov 5 by You_Bloo_Right | I wouldn't measure the level of success of a season when it is just over a quarter of the way through. |
I think over a quarter of the games played is a perfectly reasonable time for the league to start taking shape and get a sense of how teams are performing. Managers themselves often say judge us after 10 games, and it's also why you'll often see a lot of managers moved on around this stage Just to be clear, because it is difficult to be critical without being accused of bed wetting, I'm hopeful for the season ahead, I think there are signs that things are starting to click and I'm not wanting McKenna out. I just think there are some worrying trends such as lack of potency, conceding very weak goals etc that means we're not where the majority of us thought we'd be at this stage

Based on how KM views it we are at gameweek 8 I think. So really when you think of how things have progressed and the weaknesses still showing we are getting there just not there yet.

Yep, I'd agree. Thought that stat about no assists amongst all of those players was quite a telling one and a big part of why we are where we are. Profligacy in front of goal and as someone else pointed out, barely any chances created by Akpom and Szmodics are going to be huge contributors to us not being where we want to be

I get it, it's just that things do seem to get over-stated whereby "reflection on progress to-date" and "what could we do better?" quickly seems to turn to "where has it all gone wrong?". FWIW I'm reminded of KM's first full season in charge in L1. Results were a bit in and out (though marginally better than this term perhaps) until the new year - team finally "clicking" coinciding with a formation change? And having effectively re-built the team this season the challenge for KM I see as quite similar albeit a division above and with a markedly different group. Does that mean I expect us to go on a massive unbeaten run in the new year? Well, hoped for perhaps but expected, well no for reasons as much to do with me as the team. What I do think is that we may not see the best consistently from this team until the turn of the year. As you and others have said, signs are there. Oh and as others have implied, the low assists stats are basically the same as the low goals scored/profligacy issue. Better, I would have thought, to look at chances created as a measure of how we're playing as assists just tell you how good or not we are at scoring (yes yes, goals, the point of the game, etc :) )

One area where we are particularly poor is getting headers on target, but it strikes me that this is an area where you've either got it (Steve Bruce) or you haven't. As an aside, Barry Bannan is second for both chances created and big chances created, not bad for a team as poor as Sheffield Wednesday. Jack Clarke is 8th for big chances created, and top for goals per 90. And Ivan Azon is top for shots per 90. George Hirst is top for big chances missed. https://www.fotmob.com/en-GB/l Hopefully it will come good at some time. [Post edited 6 Nov 2025 10:25]

Again the profligacy issue I think a few people have interpreted my comment on the number of assists by those players as a dig at them not creating opportunities, but it was more to discuss what underlying cause is and George Hirst being top for big chances missed is pretty damning

No, I know. I don't think anyone has at all to be honest It's mostly been a decent discussion bar Chico's classic edginess. But then it is impossible to feel like we're not where we want to be without someone bringing out the term "wet wipe" | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I think some of it is a lack of confidence. We've had high turnover this summer but a decent number of the squad were here last year when we were losing most weeks and as a group we've not got that mentality yet of knowing we can find ways to win games week in and week out. I said on another thread that the 2023/24 side would have won the game on Tuesday in that last 10 minutes, not because they would have created better chances or because they were individually better players, but because they had that belief that they would win and the confidence that then gives you to execute in those big moments. We don't have that yet, it's a shame we didn't manage it on Tuesday as I think that would have done wonders for the group. The positive is that performances are improving and we are creating good chances every week. Keep doing those things and the rest should follow. xG is far from a perfect stat and you do get some outliers, but come the end of the season the xG table doesn't usually look hugely different from the league table.
