It's been a strange season so far, hasn't it? 09:44 - Nov 26 with 366 viewsbaxterbasics

In terms of signs things are going well - We are the only club in the top six without an "L" in our 6-game form.

The only other team in the entire table that can say the same is Wrexham.

Yet it seems we are destined to need to grind out the results every time, nothing is coming easy. Long periods of games where nothing seems to work, or our players can't get basics right like passing to a fellow blue. Then there's a spell where they manage to step up and the quality comes through. We have days like the 0-3 loss to Charlton, but we can also spank Sheff Utd and Nodge.

I feel like we're going to do it, all will be ok. Even if we can't catch Coventry, I agree with Guthers and others that 2nd place will do nicely. But we're going to have plenty more games where for long periods the less patient among us will be bemoaning another lacklustre performance, only for the win to somehow be bagged by the time 90 is up.

But equally there's a chance we have a monster post-Jan run and really hit our stride. Would be nice. KM has history here.

Just my thoughts after last night.

Someone on the Blue Monday podcast made a good point that drawing at home and winning away is worse for the feeling among the majority of fans, as 30,000 watch a drab draw with Wrexham, but only 2000 see the good performance at QPR and Swansea.

If we'd have beaten Watford and Wrexham, and drawn with Hull and Swansea we'd have the same number of points but maybe the fanbase would be more content.

there are signs of improvement. The defence looks more of a settled unit & we look less likely to concede - maybe we are playing more conservatively so as not to get hit on the break?
Marusiwa & Taylor seem a solid midfield unit.
Philogene loks the most likely to unlock defences. The attack still looks like a collection of good players, rather than a cohesive unit. Maybe Akpom will kick on after his goal last night (I'm glad there wasn't VAR). Obviously, getting a first goal is important, especially against the defensively minded teams & maybe the new strategy is to make sure we don;t concede & usually a goal will come. Nearly all out poor results have been after conceding first.
It may not always be pretty, but we are dragging ourselves up to the automatic spots.

Re the second goal. The replays on sky showed that it was onside.

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

I feel like KM is doing a pretty incredible job even if it might not look like that to those impatient for immediate perfection or who thought the championship would be a walk in the park.

Yes, we've got an expensively assembled squad and clearly and rightly we expected to be right up there.

But this was a really tricky season for us for many reasons. Huge change in squad, relegation hangover and also we're focusing on building the club's future just as much as short term success.

KM has managed to get entire squad buying into the idea that everyone will be involved and important. He's integrating players who are often young and have been bought for potential above immediate impact. Look at Egeli. That's a really exciting signing but not one that guarantees immediate impact. He's got to adjust to a new country and league.

He's managing supporters' expectations and the pressure. He's also kept steadfast to his principles.

We're in third gear and we're looking very very solid.

Those who are quick to criticise KM when games aren't going well will hopefully give his post-match explanations a closer read.

There is still no other manager I would rather have in charge.

Strange isn’t it. We seem to be labouring along at times, yet we sit 4th and within striking distance of 2nd. Coventry are really showing signs of consistency and maybe, just maybe they aren’t going to fall away much over the rest of the season. We haven’t yet hit our stride but are still very much on course for a good season. If I were any of the sides above us I’d be very wary of the threat we are now becoming.

Someone described our performances after Wrexham as 'laboured'. I think that is a pretty good summary of our season to date. Nothing seems to be easy or comfortable but then that is the Championship isn't it.

Our form speaks for itself and like you, I wouldn't be suprised to see us go on some form of mental run at some point when everything clicks. Playing Coventry twice in December could also be huge.

I think solidity is the main aim for Kieran at this point in the season. Yes, we could play the same gunho all out attack football we did in the last Championship season, but I don't know how well that set us up for Premier League football. I think the aim is to be a little bit more 'smart' and control games, even if that means less attacking in the final third across the game and then take the chances that come in the second half.

I think the feeling at Coventry will be if they can come away from us undefeated in both games, they’ll really fancy their chances of promotion. If we can take 4 points of them in December we’ll take the upper hand. Our squad depth and cohesion will see us well in the Second half of the season.

I think I'm right in saying the 2nd best PPG since August (Cov #1). 2nd highest goals scored in the division this season, joint 2nd least conceded. Win our GIH and we're 2nd.

The most encouraging thing is there's still a lot of potential, we're on an upward growth curve and it'll be interesting to see where the ceiling is. When we have found a higher gear in games like Swansea, QPR, Hull away etc we've looked much better than them. At our best I do think we're better than we were last time out at this level, we're just nowhere near as tight or consistent with it. If we can add that side of things to the quality we have and keep key players fit I think we're in a great position to bounce back. I wouldn't rule out catching Coventry either, they'll have their own sticky spell.
